Sandbagging of homes has been undertaken in Immingham today (Friday) by the Shoreline Housing Partnership.

With heavy rain already experienced and more forecast to come over the next 24 hours, highway engineers and drainage experts at North East Lincolnshire Council have been making preparations to respond to incidents of flooding.

Communities across Lincolnshire are being being advised to remain alert to the risk of flooding throughout today.

Across in neighbouring North Lincolnshire, Humberside fire-fighters were called to flooding in Spruce Lane, Ulceby, this morning.

David Powell, Head of the Joint Emergency Management Service in Lincolnshire, said: "Surface water flooding is still possible, so we are asking people to remain vigilant.

"Residents should keep an eye on the local forecast and not take risks such as walking and driving through flood water.

"It is simply not possible to judge how deep the water is, or whether there are any missing manhole covers and hidden obstacles under water.

“Unless your home is in immediate danger of flooding, please do not contact your district council for sandbags.

"If your home has previously experienced any kind of flooding, do be vigilant and take appropriate precautionary steps."

"We have had several reports of individual properties being flooded across the county.”

Leigh Edlin, Operation Delivery Manager at the Environment Agency, said: "Flood alerts are in place across the entire county which means that flooding is possible, so we are asking people to be prepared.

"We are working with our partners to monitor the situation, and we have teams out across the county checking rivers to make sure they are clear from obstructions."

Any residents in North East Lincolnshire who are affected by flooding should contact the council on (01472) 313131.

“So if they set the sirens off how do you know whether you are about to get your feet wet, or your house is about to be swept away by a fast moving tidal wave in a few hours? Simple answer is that you wouldn't! How then would you then know how to react differently when you hear the siren set off?”

“The flood sirens are there in case there is a breach of the sea defences as has happened twice on the East Coast with the loss of life. We do live next to a major river / sea after all and with predicted sea rises the risk of flooding from the sea becomes more likely.

However the flood risk affecting us locally is from surface water and smaller river's bursting their banks, causing localised and flash flooding where drainage systems back up and can not cope with deluge.”
