A COMPUTER scam has hit Lincolnshire – prompting police to warn residents to be vigilant.

Scammers ring people up and tell them they have a virus on their computer or are due an upgrade on their software, which can be fixed for money.

They tell the computer owner they must perform an upgrade and either ask them for a large sum of money or tell them to click on a website which infects the computer with a virus.

Gill Finn, community safety officer at Lincolnshire Police said: “Although this scam has been around for a period of time, we are still getting members the public who are not only receiving the calls but also falling prey to the scam.

“Once your computer is infected, it will be a trip to the local computer shop at cost to remove any virus or encrypted data.

“You will possibly lose any personal data, such as photos or files.”

After any such call, turn off the computer and ask advice from a computer expert.
