Scanner helps combat mobile phone thefts in Scunthorpe

MOBILE phone theft is another crime that Inspector Jayne Broughton says is "rearing its head".

With people signing up to the immobilise scheme – which records the unique serial number of their phone – officer's are now able to take a scanner in to pubs and clubs in a bid to trace stolen phones.

The scanner – used as part of Operation Apollo – helps to search out the stolen phones as identified through the serial numbers.

Inspector Broughton said: "It is easy to dip in to someone's handbag or pocket and steal a phone.

"With this system, we can take the scanners into the pubs and start searching for mobile phones.

    “As ridiculous ideas go then this one is a front runner in being a complete waste of money and time. People are just going to tell nosey coppers where to go - I certainly would. Operation Apollo has slightly less credibility than someone landing on the moon in 1969”
