THE Conservative group on North East Lincolnshire Council has defended its decision to vote against having a three-week consultation on the future of leisure services in the borough.

As reported, the proposal by the ruling Labour administration was passed with support from the Liberal Democrats at Thursday night's full council meeting.

  1. Scartho Road Swimming Pool.

However it was opposed by the Tories – and the borough's one UKIP councillor – after their call for a full select committee hearing on the subject was rejected by Labour.

The results of the consultation will be go before the leisure, tourism and culture scrutiny panel on December 3 so that recommendations can be put to Cabinet.

Conservative group leader Keith Brookes said yesterday that his party had voted against the Labour proposal because it did not go far enough.

He said: "The motion put forward by the Labour group did not guarantee that the scrutiny panel would form a select committee that would allow everybody who wanted to give evidence to put their opinions forward.

"Our amendment was a slight improvement on Labour's motion. If the Labour group wanted to be open and honest why did it not accept it?"

But Labour council leader Chris Shaw said the Tory amendment was "unnecessary" and would have delayed matters.

He said: "What is the point of waiting until next year? We either do this or we don't."

Liberal Democrat group leader Andrew De Freitas said: "In the end we supported the original Labour motion because at least by referring it to scrutiny we can have another look at it, even though a select committee would have been much better.

"If we had gone along with the Tories we would be basically saying, no more consultation, that's the end of it. Quite frankly I think they have shot themselves in the foot."

“Mr Shaw - the point of waiting is to ensure that the right decision is made! Not the decision of a power crazed despot nor the decision of a party trying to score points without considering the real issues. Wake up, smell the bacon and. Do what's right for Grimsby - for a change!”

“At least the one lone UKIP man could not be swayed unlike the un electable Lib Dems.

McGilligan Fell putting on her lippy during the debate? that showed her interest!

    Closure without referendum is WRONG!

I do hope the electorate remember this.

Well done UKIP for standing up to them, one day you will have more Councillors by your side!”

“Being a regular user of Scartho Swimming Pool I was keen to fill out the questionnaire on the NEL website and voice my opinions.
I was disgusted at the very limited and unprofessional content of the questionnaire - I am sure a better one could have been produced at any of our local schools! The questionnaire is so worded as to hoodwink people into giving the answers the council would prefer. In my opinion it is a total waste of time, ours and the 5 minutes given to preparing the document.
I also wonder if the people of Immingham were aware that their swimming facility is in competition with Cleethorpes Leisure Centre for survival. Why is this even being considered on a questionnaire regarding the Grimsby swimming pool. Surely this particular issue deserves more discussion that this or is this going to be the next controversy?”

“**wheels** -- You are right... AND HOW!

Have you followed the other current thread: http://tinyurl.com/bxth9bw

Here's but a couple of late quotes:

**back to the thread proper with **pilgrim2010 -- Sat, Nov 10, 2012, 8:52AM** with "As I understand it this consultation is not just about Scartho Baths its about swimming pools in the whole of NELC area. It will be very interesting to see the results once the whole area sheds it's views because the proposed new pool is nearer and easier to get to for those of us who live in the villages outside of Grimsby"...

Sadly, this debate is far greater than that. Much of it is covered by the other [not just thee and me] contributors able to make their valid points. The questionnaire, as promulgated by Grimland Council is typical council obfuscation. It totally avoids ALL of the relevant issues.

The ramifications of the proposed demolition of Scartho Baths (not, strictly, a 'pool') are enormous in social, economic and heritage -- and POLITICAL -- terms. If 'this lot' do what they are hell-bent on doing, ALL of us are the losers, even though THEY deserve it."**

All well worth a visit and a good read. Of course, you know that nails are being hit on the head by the number of posts earning the sum total derived from an award of minus-13 from the troll[s], and other mindless wonders.”

“Keep Scartho Baths open the pool and diving boards encourage more youngsters to train for the Olympics just modernise and save thousands. I f you want to close something then close Grimsby leisure centre their pool is a fun pool not very good if you are an ardent swimmer. Keep our swimming pool open.”
