DOG courier/dog-friendly taxi? I just wondered if any reader knows and has one to recommend? As I don’t currently have a car, I find it difficult to get my pet dog to the vet appointments.

I have a medium sized “Heinz 57” who is well behaved and friendly. He travels well and stays on his blanket.

I have had one very good firm, Links Taxis, but there is not always a dog-friendly driver available – there are just a couple, one who charges a much higher rate, and one who is fair.

When I reported this there is nothing that can be done as the drivers are freelance, but working for a taxi company.

I have tried a few so-called pet couriers, but they are operating as just a sideline extra job and for very limited hours.

They are not registered and if they ever do pick up the phone they have usually cherry picked the easy jobs and don’t have a time slot free.

One actually charged me for there and back, when the dog broke free, and I had to retrieve it. He’d got quite far, due to a dog on heat. I had missed my appointment by then and she couldn’t take us anyway, but she still insisted upon payment for her time.

Perhaps there is a real gap in the market for this type of service? For a school leaver? Unemployed animal lover with a vehicle?

One that is far and reliable, ie available at all hours, as one cannot possibly predict when one’s pet will fall ill or hope it is between 2pm and 2.30pm on a Wednesday, so it fits between the courier’s appointment of taking Mrs Jenkins Pekingese for its booster, and picking up her child from her school. After all, one wants the very best for one’s pet and may not always have access to a car.
