September brings the return of the winter species
NOW September is upon us, anglers will start to catch the winter species, writes Tony Burman.
I understand that a few whiting have already started to show. These will be the small ones, referred to as pin whiting.

I expect the bigger fish to start showing towards the end of the month. There will be the odd cod caught.
The best place for the early cod always seems to be East Halton. I do not know why this is, maybe there are resident river cod and go up the river in search of food.
I have known double-figured cod hauls in September and the word soon gets around if there are any showing.
This is good for the local area, as the demand for tackle goes up. Also, the bait is in high demand.
The local tackle shops have been having a hard time of late.
They have got the internet to contend with and cannot compete on occasions with the prices.
But someone said to me the other day from a tackle shop: "It is all right but if we close down where do you get your bait from? You can not send a pint of maggots through the post."
If your local shop has not got in what you want, ask them if they can get it in. Often they will match prices that you have seen in the magazines and on the internet.
The autumn and winter has always been a time when the sea angling takes over from the coarse, and many of the angles pack in their coarse tackle and get the heavier sea tackle out.
I think having a change keeps you fresh and more interested.
The bigger competitions are also held and this creates a buzz around the areas that the matches are to be held.
But for many they keep going all the year round. Humber SAC have been busy through out the summer and at their last match at Killingholme meant an early start.
For some a 6am meet was far too early on a Sunday morning, but all those competitors who took part caught at least eight fish.
Geoff Hill was top man with 12 fish for 4.5lb. He had a whiting in his catch and this gave him the biggest round fish of the day as well as winning overall.
Second was Adie Cooper, 14 fish for 4.3oz. The biggest flat was caught by John Gore, a 33cm flounder.
