Severe wintry weather warning for North East Lincolnshire
NORTH East Lincolnshire is preparing itself for a wintry weekend as the national cold snap tightens its grip.
The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for the Yorkshire and Humber area, with "Amber" and "Yellow" snow alerts for the duration of today and Sunday.
Temperatures are not expected to climb much above three degrees all weekend, falling to a low of -2°C overnight.
Nationally, forecasters have extended an England-wide cold weather alert, with temperatures expected to plunge as low as -10°C (14f) in some areas.
The borough has already been dusted with some brief flurries of snow in the last couple of days, but experts say that more is on the way later today.
The Met Office spokesperson said: "A band of wet weather over Northern Ireland and western Scotland will move slowly southeastwards across the United Kingdom during the day. As it does so, it will readily turn to sleet and snow, giving accumulations of two to five centimetres in places and five to 10cm widely in some areas.
"As skies then clear after dark, icy patches will develop.
"The public are advised that this is likely to lead to some travel disruption, and it is recommended to keep up to date with forecasts as the event approaches."
Early predictions of the icy and snowy conditions have already had an impact on the area's sporting fixtures with Grimsby Town's FA Trophy Tie at Bath being postponed, and all Sunday League fixtures on public pitches being called off.
Police were also called to two car crashes yesterday morning, although it has not been confirmed whether they were as a result of the wintry conditions.
The first, involved a red Nissan Micra which mounted the Meridian Point roundabout and caused damaged to what police called "roadside furniture".
And then, at around 9.30am, a low-loader truck and a van collided on the resort's Beacon Avenue.
The low loader then collided with a garden wall.
A Police spokesperson said: "The van driver was taken to hospital by ambulance for minor injury treatment.
"Diesel spilled on the ground and the fire service was asked to attend.
"The road was closed for a short time to enable the recovery of the vehicle and the clean up."
North East Lincolnshire Council have urged residents to stay safe in the wintry conditions.
Jason Longhurst, head of development at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "I'm pleased that we have had such a mild winter so far.
"Despite the weekend's forecast, we are more than ready for anything the weather has in store for the borough.
"I would urge residents to take care in the snow and, if conditions deteriorate, only travel if it is really necessary.
"And don't forget to look in on elderly and vulnerable neighbours to make sure they are OK."

“The standard of taxi driving does seem to have dropped recently (from an already low level). They must have devices in their cabs telling them when speed guns are present. I have been overtaken in 30 mph zone in Immingham and also, more worringly, in the 20 mph school zone in Cambridge road. Yet, if or when the prats are caught they will have their solicitors droning on in court about the loss of livelihood for the taxi driver.”

“my partner decided to drive carefully in the weather tonight and a country cab taxi was tailgating us down cleethorpes road and issacs hill then decided to wind his window down and shout abuse at us for driving at 20mph in snow, all the scary moments i have seen tonight around cleethorpes are taxi drivers rushing about rather than being careful, i wish they would think about safety rather than their next fare!”
