CAMPAIGNERS fighting to keep an ice rink in Grimsby have formed a committee to lead their battle – vowing to promote the facility to its maximum.

About 200 people packed the bar at Grimsby Leisure Centre, which holds the ice rink, for a meeting to discuss the campaign last night.

As reported, North East Lincolnshire Council has proposed a full revamp of leisure facilities in the area.

As part of those plans, Grimsby Leisure Centre could close and be relocated, but without the ice rink.

A petition against the proposed closure has been launched and can be signed on the Grimsby Telegraph website at www.thisisgrimsby .co.uk/icerinkpetition.

This petition is due to be presented to the council, ahead of the scrutiny panel on July 28.

However, it was suggested at the meeting last night, by Coun Stewart Swinburn (Immingham Con), that campaigners should present it to the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Coun John Colebrook, on the day of the scrutiny meeting, to ensure maximum impact.

Among those at the meeting were individual users of the facility and members of various clubs, such as Grimsby Lightning and Redwings ice hockey clubs, to figure skaters.

Yvette Norton, a figure skating coach, chaired the meeting.

She said: "We need to promote the facility because it seems not enough people are aware of how important and how well-used it is."

Sue Wells, the council's deputy director of environmental services, was asked to attend the meeting, but was unable to.

However, she sent a letter in, which was viewed by many at the meeting.

Included in the letter was: "We are not looking at any removal of leisure facilities for at least another five or 10 years.

"We are working with key stakeholders to ensure we realise the business possibilities for our investments."

The council is prepared to speak with any private companies that may wish to invest in a commercial ice rink.

Yvette said: "This is why we need to talk it up."

All those present were urged to sign the petition and carry the fight throughout North East Lincolnshire and beyond – as people from Scunthorpe and Lincoln also use the facility.

Coun Stewart Swinburn, Coun Karen Swinburn (Immingham, Con) and Coun Keith Watkin (West Marsh, Ind) were present, and all added support to the campaign.

Coun Stewart Swinburn said: "I can assure you that you have our full support."

Abbie Gowan, 15, of Grimsby, regularly uses the ice rink.

She said: "I think it is awful it could be shut as I know a lot of people who use it. Many people will be sad about it closing."

The committee, which will comprise of figures from various groups which use it, is due to step up the fight by spreading the word and making sure as many people as possible sign the petition.

Another meeting has been called for Friday, June 19 at Grimsby Leisure Centre at 7pm.

“KEEP GRIMSBY ICE RING OPEN !!! i think that it isn't fair that they might be closing it down they shouldn't becuase ice skating is fun and think how boring it will be on a weekend if you normally go ice skating with your friends and family. I have already signed the petition so i hope we get to keep it open. Grimmsby lesiure center won't be the same again without skating if they make a descion of closing it down. Orr even if they do close it down make sure they build another one before they knock it down. Also halve the populatery will go down if ice skating isn't there. please keeep it open :):):):)”

NO yet again. apart from the councillors who actually had the decency to attend the meeting and are on our side in this =D i have to agree with webbit on this one, they do only care when it's polling day well said webbit”

“I think grimsby coucil is a joke, wastes god knows how much money on a daft fountain and blue lights on victoria street in grimsby, but will not save a place that give kids a place to go and not just skate but swim and do other sports, the grimsby leisure centre holds so many good memorys for me and many of my family, and im sure the same for other familys in the area....so come on grimsby council stop wasting money and invest in our childrens future of somewhere to do activities, instead of our kids getting so bored they go out and behave like animals because they have nowhere to go or not many activities to do.”

“I will try once more to write my message. The Wionter Olympics are un Vancouver Canada next year. Without ice where will your Torville & deans come from?
It seems strange to us on the Prairies that a place like Crimsby should be fighting to keep It's one & only ice rink. Regina is a bout the population of Great Grimsby. We have rinks for hockey , skating. & curling. It is alot colder in the winter, but we make ice all the year around. After all the kids walk & then skate. Keep your rink.”

“There is not enough to do in our area so it is essential to keep the facilites that we already have, or at least replace them with an equal or improved version.”

“The Olympic Winter Games are in Vancouver Canada next year. Where will your new Torville & Dean come from if you have no ice? Here on The Canadian Prairies it is hard to visualise a place with no where to skate. Here the kids walk & then skate. We have Hockey Curling Figure Skating, & speed skating. Regina population about that of Great Grimsby. Has many rinks. Indoor, & Outdoor. We use ice making machines to condition ice, & go all year around. In the winter one can flood the back yard & skate for months.”

“as a user of the ice rink the meeting was a good idea and i have collect signitures already.
my grandad was a massive member of the council till he died to years ago so he knew all these councils now and i am shore he would be fumming to find this out. i can also he was a friend of the decent councils who acctually suport the publics ideas.
theres no point in giving up a fight that can be won so im going to keep going on this as i believe we can save grimsby ice rink”

“I feel it is discusting to even to be contemplating closing the rink without even replacing the old facility with a new site as so many people use this and will quosh the chances of so many kids in the area being able to develope their skill at skating or hockey it is not like a field were people can playfotball cricket or just run without this facility we cannot continue our sport that we all love what give anybody the right to remove something from the public that the public actually want i believe this is what our fathers and grandfathers fought for in the past wars to give us all the right to have the choice and not have the right taken away not to mention the young people who are not concidered old enough to have a say in this as this concerns them even more than myself as i have skated and played hockey here and outher places for around 30 years and feel that if somebody else wishes to do the same they should have the right and be alowed to do so why give up something we have and not replace it bringing the town into further disrepair and just put more kids out on the street were perents dont know what they are upto or if at all they are safe from harm the kids i know who go to the rink always seem to be in a happy well frame of mind and i wish to see this carry on in this town also i see schools us the rink on weekday afternoon this i believe is on a national coriqulum for gcse exams i feel as so many outhers do that loosing a ice rink in this area will only do harm to our nabourhood i only wish i had the money to build it myself as the price a cirtian councilor has is absurdly high and this person should do her home work she knows exactly who she is i can go on and on about the posertives of having a rink but cannot think of any negertives the goverment say we need to keep so come on lets see you put your money where your mouths are and give grimsby a new rink for the whole comunity to enjoy instead of takeing what little grimsby has away from its people and put the great back into grimsby”

“I attended this meeting, and on behalf of every rink user I would like to thank Councillors Stewart and Karen Swinburn and also Councillor Keith Watkin for not only having the courtesey to attend this meeting but to also give their support to the cause. We must realise that not all members of the NELC have a negative attitude to sport facilities and consequently should not be tarred with the same brush.”
