HEAD coach Andy Cox praised the character and skill on show at Grimsby Boxing Academy's latest home show.

The amateur boxing bash – held at the Beachcomber, Humberston – attracted more than 400 spectators and saw two Grimsby boxers lift Amateur Boxing Association Notts & Lincs Challenge Belts.

On Dan Wellings' title victory for GBA, Cox said: "It was Dan's seventh contest and he performed very well.

"He was stronger and, if he had really pushed, he probably could have stopped his opponent."

The coach said the bout of the night involved GBA's Paige Webb, pictured, who lost on points to Hebden Bridge ABC's Hatty Nylan.

"It was an amazing Rocky-like contest," he said. "She got hit at one point and her head flew back but then she came back and landed two punches of her own!"

Kirsty Hill notched her fifth win since joining GBA.

"This was a better performance than in Sweden, when she won a gold medal at The Golden Girl Box Cup," said Cox. "It was a complete performance from her. She had variety in her shots and her defence and didn't put a foot wrong."

Although GBA's Dan Machin suffered disappointment in the headline bout as he lost to Grimsby Amateur Boxing Club's Drew Morgan in a Notts & Lincs title showdown, Cox was pleased the belt was won by a local rival.

"Dan lost, but I'm pleased the title stayed in Grimsby," said Cox, pictured. "Dan was full of cold the next day, but that's not an excuse – Drew boxed very well and was a deserved winner.

"There was a gulf in experience – Drew had won more bouts than Dan had fought overall.

"For Grimsby to have two title winners on the night is great for the town.

"And we had five boxers making their debuts on the night, which shows great potential for the future.

"I think the night showed how well we are doing as a gym after four-and-a-half years."
