GREAT news today that another major energy company is to base its off- shore maintenance operation at Grimsby Dock East.

This former hub of the fishing industry, once the lifeblood of Grimsby, is reinventing itself as a major base for those involved in the upkeep of the giant turbines currently springing up off our coastline.

A short sail time, plus available land, has seen the energy giants arrive in the town, providing a major boost for the economy and the area as a whole.

However, is the area doing enough, and quickly enough, to ensure we have people who are equipped with the skills and who can successfully go after the work that these companies are providing?

Or are we playing catch-up and may suddenly find ourselves with jobs available but no skills to fill those positions?

On the other hand, if people from outside the area can be attracted to us – to move here and secure a future here – then that is not necessarily a bad thing!

Although, we do have an unemployment issue here, especially among the young, and we need to be doing all we can, and at speed, to ensure the younger generation in North East Lincolnshire are very clear on what opportunities exist and what training they require to ensure they take full advantage of what is on offer to them.

“Who the hell gives these people free rein to write this government propaganda?

They'll be a mouthpiece next for the flexible new deal schemes where private companies mug the government and taxpayer for £billions with the justification being that hundreds of thousands needed to run them are wiped off the government's unemployment figures.”
