Slumdog set for Oscars glory?
Certificate: 15, 120min
Genre: Drama/romance
Stars: Dev Patel, Freida Pinto and Irffan Khan.
Director: Danny Boyle.
Plot: The story of the life of an impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik, who becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, wins, and is then suspected of cheating!
What we think: Danny Boyle's multiple Golden Globe-winning modern day fairy-tale nearly wasn't made at all – and then, once it was eventually filmed, nearly couldn't find a distributor in America.
Fortunately, it did.
Then it took US cinema-goers and critics by storm – and it has now swept all before it at an awards ceremony that's widely regarded as a bellweather for the upcoming Oscars.
It's a good job, too. Slumdog Millionaire is an utterly irresistible rites of passage drama that builds to an extraordinary emotional crescendo.
Even this early in 2009, it's fairly safe to say that this may be the best film you'll see all year.
Swearing: Yes. Sex: No. Violence: Yes.
