YOUTH team boss Adam Smith was full of praise for his young charges after watching them put in a string of mature performances of late.

Last week, his side progressed to the next round of the FA Youth Cup after a comprehensive victory at Goole Town in the first qualifying round.

Goals from Rob Bryant, Lee Wattam, Caine Winfarrah and Will Peers set up a clash with Yorkshire Amateur which takes place on Wednesday at Blundell Park.

That victory was followed by a 2-2 draw with Notts County in the Youth Alliance league on Saturday.

Town led twice through goals from Wattam and Bryant, but a last-minute equaliser cruelly denied them a win.

And Smith said that in both games, his side had shown a maturity beyond their years.

"We were pretty comfortable against Goole and it was a good performance.

"After a bit of a frantic start, we got the goal we deserved just before half time which really settled us down.

"In the second half the boys were really professional, kept the ball really well and were clinical with their chances in front of goal which was good to see.

"It was a good win for us and the lads did really well."

He added: "Things have been going well for us of late and it was a decent draw against Notts County in the following game.

"It's been a bit of a whirlwind since Robbie (Stockdale) left and it's been a case of all hands to the pumps.

"The lads were understandably disappointed to see him leave but the response from them has been spot on – they've shown real maturity."

The Youth team are next in action when they take on local rivals Hull City at Cheapside tomorrow (11am kick off).
