More soccer thugs banned from future matches following Burton Albion violence
A 16-YEAR-OLD and an ex-soldier were among a group of thugs who appeared in court for their parts in the violence that marred Grimsby Town's match against Burton Albion last season.
The Mariners supporters, who rallied against Brewers' fans at the match at the Pirelli Stadium on May 8 this year, appeared for sentencing before Burton Magistrates' Court yesterday.
They were each given football banning orders, which prevent them from attending any football match in England and Wales, or certain matches played abroad, for varying lengths of time.
A teenager, who pleaded guilty to the use of threatening words and behaviour, had previously admitted throwing a plastic bottle at police during the riot.
He cannot be named for legal reasons, but was given a six-month referral order, to be supervised by the Youth Offending Team, as well as a three-year football banning order.
Speaking after sentencing, chairman of the bench Andrew Nelson told the youth: "Use this as a lesson — don't make the same mistakes."
Two men, who both pleaded guilty to the use of threatening words and behaviour, had previously been given football banning orders, both in 2005.
Ben Bycroft, of Combe Street, Cleethorpes, an ex-serviceman, who had served in Afghanistan and Iraq, was one of the defendants.
The 28-year-old was given a £300 fine, a five-year football banning order and was also ordered to pay a victims' surcharge of £15. The other man was father-of-two Johnathan Barratt, 35, of Quinton Road, Grimsby, who had been caught on CCTV kicking out at a steward at the match.
He was ordered to pay a fine of £470 and a victims' surcharge of £15, as well as being given a five-year football banning order.
Thomas Cockerill, 27, of Leicester, was charged with unlawful violence after he was caught on CCTV dismantling an advertising board and pushing it over.
He was ordered to pay £100 compensation to Burton Albion Football Club and given a three-year football banning order.
Marc Denniss, 41, of Whites Road, Cleethorpes, and Dale Scotter, 21, of Elsenham Road, Grimsby, also pleaded guilty to using threatening words and behaviour.
Each was given a three-year football banning order.

“Who cares....Hmmm...let me think..I do....as do my children...and probably the majority of the folk who care what is going on around them.
We have to live near the football ground and it isn't much fun when you see some drunken idiot causing trouble and acting in a manner that quite frankly I wouldn't expect from my youngest child...I think they should get a longer bann and fined for the trouble they cause....and what's with the not naming for legal reasons...I was under the impression that 16 was self confessed adulthood nowadays....if they're old enough to get drunk and act like idiots they're old enough to be named and shamed”
