THE announcement by Network Rail that the railway near Stainforth, which was damaged by a spoil heap collapse, wont be repaired until June is quiet frankly pathetic.

When northern Japan was struck by a colossal earthquake and tsunami two years ago, which caused catastrophic damage to Japan’s infrastructure – particularly roads and rail – the majority of it was repaired and back in use within a matter of a couple of weeks.

But still, this is dear old Blighty, where everything crawls along at a snails pace.

“hi , i am a train driver over that route and the **** heap is still moving , its creating a wave affect so its not possible to see why this has happened yet... until its all dug out what has caused this to happen wont be found out . we've heard that mine shafts under the railway might have givern way , if so this would have caused a wave effect which is how it looks , as the land went down then up , moving towards the land tip across the railway so moving the railway towards the tip . there is hundreds of tonnes of soil , ballast , rails etc moved by this force , and you can not relay track on unstable ground due to weight and movement of the trains running on top . its a very strange sight and will be for sometime to come i think ... hope this helps ..”

“I have friends working for network rail on this....... This job will be lucky if it is finished before Christmas. As people have rightly pointed out the land is still moving and nothing can be done until then. The best part of this is that it could have been prevented! The company that had the land slide used to employ grass surveyors who used to go around surveying the coal dust mountains and when they got too high or too heavy they used to insist work be started to move the coal into safer areas...... The company laid most of these surveyors off as unessasary expense!.... I wouldn't like to be the person who made that decision right now!!”

“As there is very little if any information forthcoming from Stainforth what are people expected to believe,it seems as if this is an "only those who need to know scenario".”

“Before writing such articles maybe you should be aware of the facts - such as the small matter that the land is still moving and unstable. Perhaps you would like to add an update with your wisdom on how the engineers can lay nice new straight and flat rails on land that is still moving and unstable? To complete this job will be a massive task, far bigger than just a picture can show.”

“If you read any of the reports you would know that they can not start repairs until the land slips stops moving-otherwise any work they do could be destroyed. That would be twice as costly.”
