State of People's Park in Grimsby causing concern
THE deteriorating state of People’s Park is causing growing concern for local residents.
Ward councillor Andrew De Freitas (Lib Dem, Park) told a meeting of the council’s regeneration and environment scrutiny panel that the Grimsby park was in an “appalling mess”.
Councillor De Freitas, who also raised the matter at a Park Ward Action Group meeting, said: “The cafe has permanently closed.
“The children’s play area, because of the very wet weather, is a quagmire.

“64 years ago I proposed to my now wife in peoples Park. She accepted , we are still together though a long way away From Peoples Park. Those days it was well looked after. There was no vandals then.Of course The Birch was still in use then. A good deterrent.”

“A large amount of money was invested in Sidney Park a few years ago too, but thanks to Labour's neglect it is now a disgrace. This is what Peoples Park will look like in a few more years - flower beds full of weeds instead of flowers, missing items of play equipment, broken seats and litter and dog mess all over. Sidney Sussex Ward is now so dirty that even the council leader, Chris Shaw, has moved away from the area he representsto live in Humberstone - an area with three Conservative Councillors!”

“The cafe is the biggest shambles of them all.
If a "proper" cafe or a coffee shop franchise had been built, a popular place where people wanted to spend time, meet friends for coffee and maybe have a meal, this could have been the foundation of a great park. People frequenting the park would have be a disincentive to the undesirables and an incentive for business, charity and council to work together to improve the surroundings in the park.
Instead, we got an undesirable, unvisited, empty wooden box”

“The problem is, if you start hacking at the roots of a tree, eventually, it will fall down. If, however, you thin out the dead wood at the top, the whole tree has a better chance of surviving.
Instead of reducing the number of staff doing all the work in the park, they would have been better off thinning out one or more of the managers. It should only need one manager to make a decision, not an "asylum" of them, (Yes, that really is the collective noun for managers).
How many people does it take to plant a tree in Peoples Park? Answer 5. 2 to carry out the planting and 3 managers to stand and watch.
Has anyone moved in to the Floral Hall?
I think the Heritage folk should ask for their money back.
Ramble, ramble, ramble...”
