DRIVERS in North East Lincolnshire are being steered towards a car sharing scheme – which could save them up to £500 a year.

The Grimsby Telegraph is supporting National Liftshare Week, which kicks off on Monday.

The aim of the scheme is to offer seats in your car to others living close by, who are heading to the same destinations – whether you're commuters or just heading to the shops – taking vehicles off the road and helping to split the cost.

To sign up to take part, all you need to do is check out www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk, which has teamed up with travellincs.com, to allow you to advertise or take up available seats.

Registration to the scheme is free and contacting other potential lift-sharers also costs nothing.

And, if you do so by the end of October, you could be in with a chance of winning a £100 shopping voucher for Amazon.co.uk.

Councillor Peter Wheatley, North East Lincolnshire Council's portfolio holder for regeneration and environment, said: "Everyone is on a tighter budget these days, and every penny helps.

"But car sharing can save you more than pennies, many people who share lifts are saving many hundreds of pounds a year.

"By finding others going your way you can at least halve your journey's fuel costs – as well as reducing stress levels and cutting your carbon footprint."

Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers is also backing car sharing.

He said: "I give my full support to a scheme like this.

"Councils up and down the country, including North East Lincolnshire, have been promoting this for a number of years.

"It can benefit everyone by saving money, reducing pollution and taking cars off the road.

"It gives everyone another option and if you live 100 yards down the road from someone who is making the same journey as you it makes sense and is worth looking into."
