Steering into free parking!
THERE will never be a time when local authorities can scrap car parking charges – they simply generate too much revenue to even contemplate such a thought, especially when every penny is now needed.
However, flip the coin and look at it another way – ask yourself why the out-of-town shopping complexes and supermarkets are so popular?
The answer is very simple, they are relatively easy to get to, there is plenty of parking and, guess what, it's free!
Town centres are fantastic and offer so much more in variety and local retail – but they are sometimes passed over in favour of the free parking – and also the fact that you know you are going to find a space easily, whatever time of the day or week you visit.

There must be no doubt that if car parking charges were taken away, trade in town centres across Britain would go up.
Question is, who would pay for that – is there a case for some kind of government trial where a local council, somewhere, could run free car parking as part of a trial to see if extra business is generated?
If successful, could a longer-term policy be looked at.
