Strategy to fight fraud and corruption unveiled by North East Lincolnshire Council
A NEW strategy for tackling fraud and corruption has been published by North East Lincolnshire Council.
Millions of pounds worth of public money is handled by the council each year and measures in place to protect it have been updated in response to revised government guidance, Fighting Fraud Locally.
The strategy sets out how the council’s approach to cutting fraud will help achieve aims such as cutting losses to fraud by improving understand- ing, detection and investigation, and increasing resilience by becoming more aware of new fraud risks.
Councillor Darren Billard, portfolio holder for finance, governance and support services, said: “When unscrupulous crimi- nals set out to defraud the council, they’re thieving from every law-abiding taxpayer in this borough.
“Protecting our finances has greater importance now, more than ever, as we face up to the challenges of government spending cuts and tighter budgets during the economic downturn.
“We work hard to account for every penny”.
