FEW places in Britain could claim to rival the Grimsby area when it comes to the tasty delight that is fish and chips.

With a long and proud heritage of fishing and seafood processing, North East Lincolnshire has the humble chippy embedded in its very soul. The smell of frying batter, chips and vinegar is as familiar to Grimbarians and Meggies as that of the fresh North Sea air.

It’s therefore no surprise that the area is home to what many would claim to be some of the finest fish and chip shops in the country.

February 20 – 26 is National Chip Week, an annual excuse – if one was needed – to visit your favourite chippy and gorge yourself on one of Britain’s favourite foods.

Of course, everybody has their favourite chip shop and dozens of visitors to This is Grimsby have left their own reviews telling others which ones they think are best.

Website user ‘horseylover1’ says Steels Corner House in Cleethorpes is “always busy” because “it has a great reputation for people coming to the resort” whilst ‘codbob’ goes as far to proclaim it “the best restaurant anywhere in the area” with “unbeatable” fish and chips. For those not in the mood for seafood and would prefer something a bit meatier, you won’t be disappointed according to ‘Pammy44’, who said “I have never found a steak pie to equal Steels in all my travels”.

Ocean Fish Bar & Restaurant in Cleethorpes attracted the attention of ‘peteperkins’ who tried their Senior Citizens Special and, after receiving “a big plate full” concluded, “I don't think I will eat for a week now!” ‘Applejam12 got straight to the point saying the St Peter’s Avenue establishment offered “great fish and chips as you would expect in Grimsby.”

Another chippy people have been raving about is Sealane Fisheries in Grimsby. ‘MyEnglishRose’ points out that Sealane hold a “gluten free fish and chip night every month” which is available for the same price as their regular fish and chips. Other fans include ‘puddinlover’ who says it “couldn’t be faulted” whilst ‘choccybuttons’ simply “wouldn’t go anywhere else”.

Whether you’re a regular visitor or you’ve never been before, Sealane Fisheries are also currently offering a 2 for £5 deal on a small fish, chips and peas when you print off and take the voucher currently on offer in our directory to their Grimsby Road takeaway before the end of February.

If you’ve got a favourite chippy, help support it by telling others about why you think it’s the best by leaving a review in our directory.
