Swimming: Spencer among Cads stars at Deventio Excel meeting
CLEETHORPES & District Swimming Club's (Cads) talented youngsters netted an impressive 41-medal haul at the Deventio Excel Level Two Open.
Fifteen of the club's swimmers were back in action at the Queen's Leisure Centre, Derby.
It was soon evident that the stiff competition was drawing the best out of them – all 15 set at least one new lifetime best, and no fewer than 11 of them went on to visit the medals podium with top-three finishes.
Oliver Bradley (9), Ellie Buxton (10) and Callum Gladding (15) all ended the weekend with a six-medal haul within their age groups, with Bradley the top ranked nine-year-old boy based on the BAGCATs (British Age Group Category) points system.

Other Cleethorpes BAGCATs highlights included Charlie Oliver (9), Buxton, Joe Basdeo-Taylor (10) and Jodie Unwin (11),
They were all ranked overall fourth in their age and gender BAGCAT's, with Charlie Spencer going one better with third in the boys Under-14s group.
Fourteen-year-old Spencer was CADs' highest placed swimmer in the overall BAGCATs 'Top Boy' list, which ignores age, with a seventh placed finish
Buxton was the highest placed female swimmer, in 10th place overall in the 'Top Girl' list.
Freya Davies (10) was in imperious backstroke form with three lifetime bests as she swept the board in the girls Under-10 category with a hat-trick of firsts (50m, 100m and 200m).
Despite some very close run races, she was the only Cads girl to take a gold medal over the weekend as Buxton placed second in the 50m fly, 100m fly and 200m freestyle, and Holly Williams (14) placed second in the 200m fly and 400m individual medley.
Jodie Unwin (11) and Lucy Krofchak (10) rounded off the club's girls medallists with three third place finishes each.
The Cleethorpes boy's medals haul was led by Spencer with six – four of them gold – as he won the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley.
The highlight of Bradley's six-medal haul was his first place in the 50m butterfly with team-mate Oliver taking first place in the final event of the program, the 200m freestyle to crown a weekend where he also took bronze medals in the 50m backstroke and freestyle events.
Basdeo-Taylor (second in the 200m breaststroke and third in the 200m IM) and 14-year-old Jack Newton (second in the 200m butterfly and 3rd in the 400m IM) kept the CADs medals total flowing.
And Gladding rounded it all off with his own four-medal haul, including a first place in the 200m backstroke.
