A TAXI driver who claims he was threatened with a knife by a passenger has spoken of his shock.

Wayne Winfarrah said he was taking two men to Immingham Civic Centre at 7.15pm on Monday, when the incident happened.

It is alleged that as they neared their destination, the passengers – who he had picked up from Roberts Street, Grimsby, at around 6.50pm, both told him they had no money.

Mr Winfarrah then turned the silver Fiat Doblo around and drove back along Pelham Road towards Immingham Police station, refusing to stop the car, despite requests from one of the men.

The man then allegedly swore at Mr Winfarrah, pulled out a knife, waved it near his head, and again ordered him to stop the vehicle, which he did.

Mr Winfarrah said the two passengers than ran off towards the Civic Centre.

Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph, the 37-year-old taxi driver claimed: “I was shocked.

“All for the sake of a taxi fare. I’ve done the job for 12 years and had one or two things happen, but I’ve never had someone pull a knife on me. It was pretty scary.”

Sgt Ray Marks, of Humberside Police, confirmed that two men had been arrested in connection with the incident.

One man has been charged with a public order offence, possessing an offensive weapon, and making off without payment, and appeared before Grimsby Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Another man has been released on police bail and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.

    “driver in gy,

If you're not happy with your "job", leave, and stop winging ....simple! There's too many anyway.

Perhaps you don't want a real "job" where you have to work for your wages. Sorry, taxi drivers don't like that word, "work", do they?

As I've on this topic on other threads, all taxi drivers do is,

    Moan, Moan, Moan,
    Grab, Grab, Grab,
    and
    Want, Want, Want..”

“And people wonder why some taxi drivers are less than cheerful....
working 60/70 or more hours a week,( for less than most people earn in 40) and in constant threat of violence and stabbings etc.- continuously cut up by bus drivers who are upset by the rank extensions, and think it's our fault, and screwed to the floor by more and more regulations that will eventually force them to visit the dole office....
All for about £3.50 an hour... - and when you complain to the office... they say they don't care about the drivers, and tell you to work even more hours... time to get a new job... if thats possible!
Spare a thought for us drivers.... life is not as easy for us as you think....”

“With these offences they will probably only receive a fine which will probably end up not getting paid as they will plead that they have no money and maybe a suspended sentence as well due to appearing before a magistrate and these having limited sentencing powers and these people would receive more if sentenced in crown court as these are judges who have proper sentencing powers. Even though these judges still have legislation to adhere to. I agree money upfront but not just for the residents of immingham because they are not all the same and to say that they are is purely labelling theory. if these people do receive a custodial sentence then wayne should feel short changed as they will probably only get a year or less compared to harsher sentences in crown court then they would get it reduced if they plead guilty. These are people who blatenly disregard the law and these drivers safety who make sure that people like this get home safely. They dont care that most of these drivers have families and they should be able to go about their jobs without the fear for their safety and their families should not have to worry each time that they go out to work the road if there is going to be a knock on the door from a police officer saying that their husband or wife has been seriously injured or even killed while doing the job that they do. The magistrates should make an example of people like this and give them the four years that the government say that someone should receive for carrying a knife. the prisons are overcrowded so if they stop filling them up with mothers whose kids skip school without their knowledge and non-payers of council tax there would be more prison spaces free for people like this and maybe our taxi-drivers would be a bit safer if people knew that the sentence for threatening drivers and making off with out paying (if this was done in a shop or petrol station it would simply be called theft) was harsher it could make them think twice about committing these crimes. Maybe wayne should have threatened them with his useless and pointless NVQ in taxiing.”

“you may laugh at the ordeal but these cabbies provide a public service at the end of the day and should be treated with respect at least they are trying to earn an honest living.”
