Team GB golfer Ashton Turner is going for gold in Sydney

NOT content with becoming one of the first golfers in more than a century to represent Team GB, Alford's Ashton Turner believes he can celebrate the milestone with silverware.

The 16-year-old is one of ten golfers chosen to represent Britain at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, a competition that sees 1,700 athletes, aged 12 to 20, compete across 17 sports in many of the venues that hosted the Sydney 2000 Games.

Great Britain were last represented in golf at the Paris 1900 Olympics before the sport was dropped from the Games programme after St Louis 1904 – however it is set to return in Rio in four years time.

Team GB are in safe hands as they make their tentative steps back into the sport, with Queen Elizabeth Grammar School's Turner having helped England win the boys' Home Internationals last year as well as being crowned the 2012 English Boys' County Champion of Champions.

And the Kenwick Park Golf Club member insists that while he is stepping into the unknown in Sydney, that does not mean he won't be dreaming big Down Under.

"I am really looking forward to it and I can't wait to get a quick start in after the winter and hopefully put in a good performance," said Turner.

"It came out of the blue when I found out I had been selected. I hadn't really heard about it beforehand so it was a surprise.

"I have represented England for the last couple of years and last year we won the boys' Home Internationals which was good.

"I have never played as far as Australia but I have played abroad quite a bit so I should know a few of the golfers, but there will be a few that are new to me I am sure.

"And the target is simple – to try to come back with gold. I want to put in a good performance and get noticed really."

Turner also admits the chance to continue the feel-good factor surrounding sport in the UK following the success of London 2012 is a fantastic opportunity.

But the former Alford Primary School pupil is not about to stop there, with his trip Down Under well and truly whetting his appetite for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

"I was glued to the TV watching a lot of the Olympics this summer and it is a great honour to carry that on and hopefully I can do them proud and put in a good performance," he added.

"And it gets you thinking about the future and hopefully in a few years time I can be part of the main thing in Brazil in 2016."
