LET us help you turn a Grot Spot into a Hot Spot!

Today, we are launching our New Year campaign to clean up our town – and we have already got the backing of North East Lincolnshire Council.

Getting involved couldn't be simpler. If you spot an area that is being used as a dumping ground that needs cleaning up, contact our newsroom and let us know.

We'll be out as quick as a flash to get a picture of the evidence – whether it's a mountain of mattresses, a wasteland of white-goods or a carpet of cans.

You can also give us details of any unsightly areas by leaving your comments on this story.

We will pass them on to the council and, if it is responsible for the land, it has pledged to get along in double-quick time and get your Grot Spot looking like a Hot Spot again.

Grimsby Telegraph editor Michelle Lalor said: "Following on with what we've done with New Horizons to clear up the area we want to try and make the authorities aware of any areas that are concerning the public.

"We pledge to pass on any details you give us to the council to ensure Grimsby is looking its best for 2009."

To get you started, our eagle-eyed photographers have been out and about looking for areas in need of a spring clean, and have already spotted these two eyesores.

Mountains of rubbish have been dumped at the rear of a boarded up shop on the corner of Grimsby's Stanley Street and Oxford Street.

And just look at the state of this alleyway that leads from Wellingtion Street to the rear of the shops on Convamore Road.

Tony Neul, the council's acting deputy director for neighbourhood services, said: "During the last year, the council has been getting increasingly tough on fly-tippers and we want to continue that.

"As has always been the case, we will respond quickly to any reports of fly-tipping or litter grotspots through our street cleaning crews and enforcement teams.

"We would encourage residents to either inform our neighbourhood services team by calling (01472) 313131 or by responding to the Telegraph's campaign. We take fly-tipping across the borough very seriously and will respond to any reports we receive."

Our campaign also has the support of NELC's portfolio holder for the environment, Coun Martin Vickers.

He said: "We welcome this campaign. Anything that can alert the council quickly to problems is helpful and we can then take immediate action."

“Why Oh Why do we bother to try and keep the alleyway clean and tidy behind our home when you have got local people(i could think of better wording for them) and they know who they are just dumping anything and everything in the alleyway they obviously havent got any idea of decent living standards or pride in the area or their homes to keep on doing this,At least try and have a bit of thought for the decent hard working people(and there is some in this area)who do take pride in their homes and the area around it.If you want to live in rubbish then by all means keep it in your home and live happily ever after and let the decent people live free of your trash but alas i very much doubt it because i dont think you have any idea of decency.”

“We have lived here over 20 years, worked hard to pay for our own home, why did we bother a lot of the houses around here are now rented usually by single mums and unfortunately we have acquired the druggies also. I have kepf my alleyway clean for all these years, not anymore people just use our alleyway behind richard st and haycroft st as a tip. I have reported this and it has been cleared several times but alas we are there again old mattresses and doors etc. I feel that all our years of working hard to provide for ourselves and take care of our elderly neighbours has been a waste of time. We cannot go out into our backways for fear of old used druggie needles and falling over other peoples rubbish, where has everybodies pride gone?”

“the passage between tennyson street and alexander rd in grimsby behind nettos is a disgrace. theres broken bottles and rubbish and overgrown bushes. on occasion this passage has been known to be used for drug deals.some residents have had their back gates vandalished. this is a nice area with good neighbours and would be better if the passage was clear and able to be used.”

“the alleyway between clarendon road and littlecoates road is really bad and makes the alley in the picture with the dumped mattress look quite good thats also in clarendon road, i keep my part clean and tidy but nobody else does and the weeds are as high as the fences now and there is also rubbish down there, window cleaners refuse to go down there to clean the windows at the back of the houses because its so bad but people just seem to ignore it, it would be appreciated if anything could be done about this”

“Am I the only person who believes that the councils decision to stop free collection of larger items of waste from home addresses and restrictions on how and what can be taken to the waste/recycle centre has caused this increase of fly tipping in the first place.
I'm sure it must cost more to clear up this mess, which has a detrimental effect on everyone and gives a negative impression to visitors than to manage this problem as before.
Go back to free collection of larger waste items and allow people to take all their waste to the waste/recycle centre and I'm positive their would be a massive improvement within six months.
Act Now and make a Greater Grimsby for everyone!”

    “Behave:
You have twice entered Immingham and yes, when I am there, I am appalled at the amount of litter and broken glass. The thing I can't understand is everybody seems to be fond of dogs. Do they not realise the damage broken glass can do to dog's paws?
When I walk mine down Green Lane - the Blossom Way side - I always take a full-sized carrier bag for her poo and then, before I get to a bin, I fill it up with all the litter, polystyrene takeaway containers and bottles, broken or not then tie it closed and put it in the bin. The street-sweeping guy does go down there but it's the amount of it all that is incredible. However, I like to feel I have helped a bit.”
