IT ISN'T just the golden sands that makes Cleethorpes special, but the people too.

That is why we want locals to get involved in Improving Cleethorpes Together – a drive to spruce up the award-winning resort and reward those who do.

It can be anything that improves Cleethorpes – from a child who goes on weekly litter picks with their grandma to a large corporation which has cleaned up the area it works in.

Chairperson of Cleethorpes South Forward Environmental Sub-Group, Beryl Rees-Smith, said: "We want people to step outside and look at what people are doing and the impact they are having on Cleethorpes and let us know about it.

"Cleethorpes is a lovely town, it is diverse and lively with a lot going on, but it has its problems and we need to address them.

"This is all about getting people to think about what they can do to help and showing them they can make a difference."

The campaign is the first of its kind in the country and has already attracted some nominations.

Each nominee will go before a panel of judges made from local people and the winner will receive a window sticker of the campaign logo so the rest of the resort recognises them as someone who has done their bit – in the hope others will follow their example.

Chairman of Cleethorpes South Forward group, Keith Brown, said: "We are very excited and we want as many people as possible to get involved and hopefully it will grow from here.

"It will encourage people to clean and brighten the place up and is more proactive, getting residents and businesses on board rather than just having a go at North East Lincolnshire Council all the time.

"We believe the improvement of Cleethorpes is down to the people in Cleethorpes and we can't expect other people to respect the resort if we don't respect it ourselves."

The competition will run all year round.

As well as nomination forms printed in the Grimsby Telegraph's recently-launched Cleethorpes and Villages daily newspaper, they are also available by e-mailing kbrown1417@gmail.com or beryl.reessmith@btinternet.com, cleesouthforward@groups.facebook.com, from Cleethorpes Library and St Aiden's Church office.

Send your completed forms to Faye Preston, 80 Telegraph House, Cleethorpes Road, Grimsby, NE Lincs, DN31 3EH or to the e-mail addresses above.
