PRETTY IN PINK: Hundreds of local women take part in last year's Race For Life in Cleethorpes.

After the success of the 2012 race, with 2,500 women and girls raising £139,000, they hope thousands more will join from Tuesday, January 15.

Alison Mackfall, Cancer Research UK's Yorkshire and Lincolnshire events manager, said: "There are more than 200 cancers and we won't give up until we find cures for them all. It's fighting talk. Cancer, Cleethorpes is coming to get you."

The latest statistics show that every hour three people are diagnosed with cancer in the East Midlands.

Cancer, along with heart disease and strokes, are the main killers in the borough.

The 5km race for women and girls will start at Meridian Park on Sunday, May 19.

Fundraisers last year included Fiona Beevers of the White Horse in Marshchapel and her children, Georgia and Charlie.

Fiona said: "There was such a good atmosphere, everyone united together and although it was a serious subject, it was great fun.

"Sadly, everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, which is why we have to do everything we can to beat the disease.

"People should sign up as soon as they can to take part."

Alison added: "Race For Life is non-competitive. It's not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk it in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can jog, run or even dance around the course!

"It is an amazing way to celebrate life, but also remember those who have been lost to the disease. Participants may be decked out in pink or fancy dress but what's inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer.

"The battle against cancer never stops and for this reason we need everyone to return to the fight in 2013 and bring new recruits with them."

    “grimrich:

Whilst I have no qualms about donating to this charity, I also have serious doubts as to where funds are allocated.

I used to run the Race for Life every year when I was younger and fitter. However, one particular year when I received an application form the accompanying letter said something along the lines of "if you wont be getting many sponsors can you not bother entering please as the entry fee only covers the cost of race marshalls and other things blah blah blah".

I refused to enter that year and many years after that. Marshalls and other officials should be providing their services to stand around the course for free as volunteers, and as for the rest of the expenses, I seem to remember at the time it was sponsored by Tesco, I might be wrong on that one. If so, they can afford to supply goods and services free too!”
