Grimsby Town at Welling: Time to get back to winning ways, say bosses
JOINT boss Paul Hurst reflects on all things Grimsby Town ahead of tomorrow's FA Trophy visit to Welling...
On Welling...

Rob Scott, left, and Paul Hurst want Grimsby Town to return to winning ways.
" When you see the team-sheet tomorrow, you'll see from the side that we want to win the game. We've stated from the offset that we want to win this trophy and we've got a real chance of doing so. That said, we go into a really tough game at Welling. I don't think there's a team in the country that's in better form. But we're not in bad form ourselves if you look at our unbeaten run, so it's very much a clash of two teams in form. We would have liked the tie to have been at home, but that's being greedy. We've had a couple of home ties already. We watched Welling at the end of last season in the play-offs, so they've been there and done it, albeit they've made a few changes in personnel. But you only have to look at the fact that they beat Newport and Woking, so I'm sure we won't hold any fear for them. It's a game they'll be looking forward to but so are we – we want to progress and we want to get back to winning ways after two draws, and tomorrow would be a great time to do that. Welling had a slowish start but are now right on form and confidence is key to that. We want to make sure we're in the draw again on Monday. I was lucky enough as a player to play at Wembley and that's something that's stuck with me. I'd like our players to get those memories."

" It wasn't about what Kiernan lacked. It was more due to the fact that we've got Dayle Southwell, another young player, and we felt we could only carry so many youngsters. Playing the same position as Dayle didn't help Kiernan's cause. We felt he needed to improve on the physical side of things, but he showed in glimpses what he'd got and why we brought him to the club. We're pleased that he's got a club and is finding himself in the team scoring goals because he was a pleasure to work with. He worked hard on the training ground and was never a moment's trouble. So we wish him all the best, after tomorrow! I expect him to try to prove us wrong for letting him go. As a player, you always want to impress people. We know he'll be ready for it, looking to get on the scoresheet and put in a good performance."
On injuries...
" Our squad is very healthy going into tomorrow's game. With the exception of the long-term injury for Liam Hearn, everything is good for us. The lads have trained well and look lively – hopefully we can take that into tomorrow. I don't think there's a great deal to change. Defensively, there has to be a change with Nathan Pond going back, so Shaun Pearson will come back in. But other than that, we haven't got too many options with Aswad (Thomas) being out suspended as well."
On Jamie Devitt...
" He did well off the bench (against Hereford) but it's about monitoring how he feels and whether he thinks he's ready to start, or whether he's better having that impact off the bench. He'll certainly be close to the starting line-up."
On Anthony Elding...
" His loan spell at Preston hasn't happened and initially I would have said it wasn't going to happen having seen them sign Joe Garner. But then we did get a reply from them saying there is still some interest. So it's not dead and buried, but then again I'm not sure how interested you can be in someone and not move on it. Who knows? It's there but at the same time Anthony is available if any other clubs want to be take him. We're not planning on having him in the squad for tomorrow, as we speak, because there is still that potential interest and the fact that we have made him available for transfer or loan. We don't want to risk him getting injured, and we have got enough strikers to get by without him."
On players leaving...
" There's an outgoing that might potentially happen but we're waiting on clubs getting the go-ahead to tick that final box, so we're not sure on that one. I don't want to say which player because we haven't spoken to them as yet, but it is one of the players who is on the fringes."
