THE Brigg Emergency Plan has now been drawn up and registered at district and higher level.

"Be prepared" is a long-standing term used by the Scouts. And now the Brigg Emergency Plan has been completed, our community is indeed ready in case of flood, major incident or some other mishap.

There are procedures in place to assist residents, as and when required. If an emergency is encountered, the town council has systems in place for staff and councillors to be alerted and to answer the call.

Although North Lincolnshire Council and other agencies will be expected to provide most of the resources and manpower, town councillors will have valuable local knowledge.

The mention of "emergency planning" years ago produced mental images of the Cold War and possible nuclear alerts.

Even in the era of Glanford Borough Council – established in 1974 – there was a sub-committee tasked with ensuring we were prepared if disaster came our way.

There were rumours that a so-called nuclear bunker control centre existed underground in Brigg, but this was never confirmed by anyone in authority.
