Transport firm pays out after union steps in to help worker whose thumb was crushed
A LORRY driver whose thumb was crushed as he unloaded a trailer at work has received £5,500 in compensation.
Ian Castle, from Grimsby, demanded compensation from his employer through the GMB union, which funded the professional help of Thompsons Solicitors.

The driver worked for general haulage firm P A Dunwell Transport Limited, of Caistor, and was injured when he was lowering the roof door of the lorry he was unloading.
The roof door crashed down on him suddenly, hitting him in the shoulder and trapping his thumb against a lever.

“P a dunwell will always tell you to look at your contract. In his contract it says he supplies gloves but when you ask him for some he will tell you he's not handing gloves out because he found them laying around the yard.he tried to not pay me my last wages but when wife went in next day and made him look silly he soon payed out who does he think he is stopping Anybodys wages with out no prior warning . I reckon this firm has the biggest turn over drivers this guy in my opinion is one of the worst employers in and around linconshire I just fell sorry for anyone that is unfortunate to work for him”

“i will say if you had not had the help of the union you would have got nothing. this place already has a bad reputation for not paying the drivers wages, also docking peoples wages illegally. its always been a bad outfit it wants closing down asap.”
