THE brother of a former King Carnival has paid tribute to "a true Meggie" who was convinced that he would join the beloved wife he has sorely missed since she passed away in 1999.

Len Tyler, of Hollingsworth Close, Cleethorpes, sadly passed away aged 80 at Clarendon Hall Nursing Home in the early hours of the morning on August 30, after battling cancer for a year.

His brother, charity marathon runner Keith Tyler, 65, described him as "gregarious and outgoing" as he recalled stories about his brother, who was 15 years his senior.

Len and his late wife Maggie were best known for their role as King and Queen Carnival at the Cleethorpes Carnival Parade between 1987 and 1991 – when festivities lasted an entire week.

Keith said: "He and Maggie would always dress up even before they were King and Queen and he was fantastic with the children.

"Both of them were such funny characters and everyone seemed to love them.

"They were like a double-act and wherever we went, people would fall about laughing.

"Len had all the jokes and Maggie had such an infectious giggle that it made everyone else laugh, too."

Sadly, Maggie died in 1999 after suffering with ovarian cancer.

However, Keith said his brother was convinced that when he died, he would join her in the afterlife.

"Len was absolutely certain that he would see her again when he passed.

"If those two are together again then there will be an almighty party going on up there right now," added Keith.

Frederick Leonard Tyler was born on April 28, 1932 in Coronation Road, Cleethorpes to parents Frederick Arthur and Dorothy Tyler, known locally as Arthur and Dolly.

He went to St Peter's School, then Thrunscoe School, then did three years national service in Germany. When he came back, he had a variety of jobs, including working on the docks, in construction and as a food process worker for Ross for most of his life.

Len married Maggie in 1976 and they lived on Highcliffe, but Len moved to Hollingsworth Close in his later years.

Keith added: "He lived in Cleethorpes his whole life and took a lot of pride in being Carnival King – he was a true Meggie, through and through.

"I remember that he showered me with presents at Christmas – as the youngest, he spoilt me rotten.

"He was very protective over me when I was a child and throughout my life has always taken a big interest in what I have been doing," Keith added.

Theatrical Len took to the stage many a time in his early years and was also an accomplished ballroom dancer.

Acting and musicals were something he enjoyed well into his most senior years.

"I used to take him to the theatre quite regularly. We would go all over – to Hull, Lincoln and we were always at the Grimsby Auditorium," Keith said.

A service will be held at the Grimsby Crematorium, at 1pm on Monday, September 10. Floral tributes can be sent or donations can be made to Mashfords Donations Account, with the final sum being donated to the Children with Cancer charity.

“I remember working with him at Ross in the '70's he was always a great character and gave us some good laughs.
He and Maggie were ideal for the Carnival King and Queen, they were made for the role and did a great job.
I saw him in hospital a couple of weeks before he passed away, he was still making humorous comments then, he was a born entertainer and should have gone into showbiz.
It's nice to think of him being with his beloved Maggie once more, God Bless Len.”

“Its not very often you come across someone which such positivity and humour and Len Tyler definitely had both as the Carnival King. He had an infectious laugh and always made you smile as the Carnival King. You made so many people happy and you will be sadly missed. As someone who knew Len personally and as a family friend you certainly are one of the good people in life who was always cheerful. You will always remain as King Carnival and as someone who remembers the good days you will be remembered now and always. Absolute gentleman.”
