John, 49, said: “When Face Value came to an end we decided we were not ready to stop playing Genesis music, so we got our heads together and formed Mama.
“We recruited some excellent musicians and more importantly Genesis fans in the shape of James Cooper (drums), Mark Conroy (bass) and Mark Comish (guitar).
“People tell us at our shows that we come very close to sounding like Genesis. I have the same vocal style and range as Phil Collins, or so I am told. And the ‘proper’ musicians in the band work very hard to recreate the right notes and sounds, which involves a lot of time and effort on their part.
“We also cover all the bands’ 40-year history from the very first albums up to their last album with Phil, We Can’t Dance.
“We have had feedback from ex-Genesis member Steve Hackett, which was very positive and he hopes to attend one of our shows this year.”
Genesis remain John’s favourite band to this day, but he found it tough to recall his favourite song. He said: “I would personally say the songs Mama, In The Cage, The Carpet Crawlers and In The Air Tonight.
“This will be the first time we have played in Grimsby, however I do have some family from Holton-le-Clay who are regular visitors of the club.
“There is a real sense of excitement when you go into a place where you have never played before and you are wondering how the audience will react.
“There has been a lot of interest from Genesis fans in this area since we played Tribfest so it seemed like a great idea to play in Grimsby.”
Tickets are £8 in advance and £10 on the door. They are available from Replay Records on 01472 351125 or from the venue on Railway Street, Grimsby.
