After a successful start, his time with the Mariners turned sour when he infamously clashed with Ivano Bonetti after a 3-2 defeat at Luton Town in February 1996.
After leaving Cleethorpes in 1996, he had a short playing spell at Darlington before taking over at Scunthorpe.
He went on to lead them to promotion twice during nearly a decade with the club.
The 51-year-old had most recently been employed as director of football at League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers.
