Having just left school at 14, my first job was in a pet shop.

The boss had gone to dinner and a lady came in and asked for a pound of horse meat.

I said: “Oh, we don’t sell it.”

She looked surprised and left.

When the boss came back, I told him about this. He said: “Kathleen, you have been cutting and weighing it all this morning.”

I was so sad I cried for days and left the next day. I felt like a murderer.

Kathleen Outhwaite, (now 85), Ulster Avenue, Grimsby.

“I do not have a problem with eating horsemeat, as long as i know what it is. The problem i have is the meat is not regulated. Horses are injected with substances that are poisonous to humans and we could end up with a BSE type disaster on our hands, with people suffering brain damage and all sorts. If they are to use this as an alternative, they should make sure that it is fit for human consumption and presumably lower the price, if they are selling it at beef prices.”

“Good point Wrangler. What hypocrites some people are .. they don't mind how animals are slaughtered, as long as it doesn't impinge on their maudlin sentimentality for what are and are not 'pets' of one sort or another.”

“Eboneeza - That is where meat comes from, it is a living animal that is killed and ripped apart to get at the bits we want to end up with on our plates. Unfortunately the insides of animals are full of nasties, including poo! It is only with good skills and procedures at the abattoir that the risk is minimised.

If you are worried about the treatment of animals in their last few minutes, you should look into Halal and cosher methods of killing the animals.”
