MEMBERS of Caistor In Bloom have vowed to dig deep for a successful 2013 – despite being up against some well-rooted competition.

This season's campaign, which will see the group competing against other finalists for a Britain In Bloom Award, was launched with a consultation coffee morning to secure the opinions of residents.

There, committee members revealed that this year the town is up against eight other finalists in the Large Village category. These include St Pierre du Bois in Guernsey, Coupar Angus in Scotland, Eynsford in South and the South East, Watlington in Thanes and Chiltern, Hillsborough in Ulster, Usk in Wales and Barwick in Elmet in Yorkshire.

Some, like Caistor, are new to the national competition, but Usk is a seasoned campaigner and among the front runners in the competition, having won Britain In Bloom seven times and four times represented Britain at the European finals.

Chairman Deborah Barker, pictured, said: "Caistor In Bloom recognises the importance of canvassing the opinions of the residents of Caistor when it comes to initiatives that go beyond routine litter picking and weeding public areas.

"It was the community participation that gained Caistor 49 out of 50 in the East Midlands In Bloom entry 2012. We can build on that nationally."

President Ernie Brown also gave a motivational speech on how far Caistor has progressed in such a short period of time.

He said: "Caistor is a unique place and the support from businesses and residents has been fantastic so far.

"Now we need to up the levels and really show how we can embrace the sense of civic pride we hold to really put Caistor on the map in this national competition."
