A LOCAL government stalwart is retiring from her post after 20 years.

Maureen Stennett, 62, has been the clerk of Waltham Parish Council for the past two decades and is retiring to spend more time with her family.

She said during her time at the helm she had overseen many changes to the village and believes it is a better place than when she took up the role back in 1989.

She said: "It is a much bigger place now and the workload is a lot more than it was 20 years ago. The job has been a passion of mine and I will miss it, although I will still have some involvement.

"The village looks nice and has some great facilities now and that is all down to the work of the parish council.

"I've forged a good relationship with everybody during my time here, from councillors to NELC officers."

Mrs Stennett is handing the position over to her deputy, Lesley Leach, who will take over the full time role at the end of the month.

She added: "I am sure Lesley will continue to move the parish forward and I wish her every success."
