CARAVANNERS and campers in East Lindsey are being reminded to take fire safety seriously as the tourist season gets under way.

Advice has been offered by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue to help people avoid a potentially fatal incident as the holiday season approached.

Fire protection officer, Paul Howes said: “Skegness has the largest concentration of caravans per square mile in Europe and with more than 20,000 caravans being used for holidays, weekend breaks and as permanent residences in the area, it is no surprise that accidental fires happen.

“As a fire in a caravan or mobile home is nine times more likely to lead to death or injury than in a house it is important that people are aware on how to avoid being in such situations.”

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue has issued its top tips to anyone staying in a caravan this year which include parking vans at least six metres apart, never use BBQs inside a caravan or awning, ensure you have a working smoke alarm fitted, never leave cooking appliances unattended, don’t leave children alone in caravans and don’t smoke in bed.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue is also encouraging caravan owners and campers to think P-A-T: Phone - know where the nearest phone point is, Arrangements - know what the fire safety arrangements are on the campsite and Torch - have a torch by the door.
