ONE week was all it took Wayne Sargent to move from the devastating news of being diagnosed with terminal cancer into the loving arms of his beautiful bride.

The 31-year-old from Immingham enjoyed the happiest day of his life just days after being told he was destined to lose his heroic three-year fight against mouth cancer.

On Saturday, Wayne tied the knot with his partner of five and a half years Cheryl Bridge, 22, at a packed Grimsby Register Office and in front of their four-year-old daughter Lily-Mae after just a week of planning.

The happy couple are refusing to let ongoing chemotherapy treatment interrupt their wedded bliss and paid tribute to an army of friends and family who helped arrange their big day on such short notice.

Wayne and Cheryl are refusing to let ongoing chemotherapy treatment interrupt their wedded bliss.

Wayne, who relies on the support of his mum while Cheryl works as a care home chef during the day, said: "We were so happy with the number of people who turned up for the wedding, there were about 180 people there and most pitched in to organise the day.

"After the ceremony we went back to the Immingham Civic Centre where the party continued."

The former forklift truck driver will now draw on the unshakeable mental strength which helped him through two and a half years of waiting for a diagnosis as he looks to enjoy every day he has left with his new family.

He added: "I noticed problems long before I was sent to see a specialist but we won't dwell on that now. We want to take each day as it comes."

Friends from all corners of the country raced back to Immingham when word got out about Wayne and Cheryl's big day with many equally quick to dip into their pockets to ensure the pair arrived at the ceremony in style.

Cheryl, who has the heartbreaking ordeal of explaining her daddy's illness to Lily-Mae, said: "She knows that he is not well but at the moment we want to enjoy our life together.

"I would like to thank everyone who helped out with the wedding, people paid for flowers and we even had a limo to take us there." Read about how friends and family are rallying to help the couple - even raising funds for a family holiday to Center Parcs - in today's Grimsby Telegraph.
