WEST End star Lee Mead proved he was all heart as he performed at a charity concert for the Big Red Heart Appeal – only to be "upstaged" by a Grimsby theatre group.

The star took to the stage in front of 700 fans who had turned out for the summer gala concert at the Grimsby Auditorium – raising a massive £15,000 for the charity.

Launched in February, the Grimsby Telegraph-backed appeal aims to raise £2 million over the next two years to radically overhaul cardiac services at the Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital.

MC for the concert David Wrightam welcomed the singing star on to the stage following a stunning opening medley of Abba songs by Curtain Up Productions – formerly known as the Grimsby And Cleethorpes Operatic Society.

The group also performed songs from West End shows Hairspray and Wicked – which Lee is currently starring in – prompting him to lavish them with the ultimate praise, telling them they were "better" than him.

To find out more about the show – and how the appeal is going – see today's Grimsby Telegraph.

“Another Lee fan here. Although I don't live a million miles from Grimsby, this was my first visit and what a friendly place it is! The concert venue was first class and I found that Curtain Up certainly added to my enjoyment of the evening! It was great to see such commitment, enthusiasm and skill from them. I would suggest we go with Lee's assessment of their performance. I'm sure this is how he started out and he clearly enjoyed and valued their performance. I hope Grimsby will let us repeat this lovely evening sometime. And I'm glad that such a good amount of money was raised!”

“A Fan.....thank you so much for supporting the local community!!! You were obviously at a totally different show to everyone in the theatre, if you had been there you would of heard the rapturous applause our outstanding local theatre group were given by a very appreciative audience. Maybe it was a little sour grapes that you were not up there yourself!!”

“To "A Fan, Grimsby" .... I suggest you keep your opinions to yourself. Its sad people like you who spend their time putting negative comments on everything to try and make your own sad little like better.

The Auditorium didnt put Curtain Up on the same billing... the EVENT ORGANISERS did... LEE MEADS AGENT.

Grow the hell up you sad excuse for a person!”

“I am another Lee fan who travelled a long way to see the show and agree that he was totally amazing.
The Curtain Up Productions were fantastic too, a very talented and enthusiastic group. I loved their 'Wicked' number, 'Glinda' was fantastic!”

“I too travelled a fair way to see Lee and it was so worth it as he was fantastic - he makes you 'live' the songs and his voice is just amazing.
As for Curtain Up they too were amazing - I have seen (and been in) a few am dram productions and this group were top notch and well deserved the praise that Lee gave them - I for one thoroughly enjoyed their part in the production - in fact i would have loved to see their version of Jesus Christ Superstar!!!”

“I am a big fan of Lee and as you can see from my hometown I came a long way just to see him (Mad? yes quite probably lol) but I loved to see Curtain up, their Wicked number was just that Wicked, they seemed to be having so much fun. Lee and Niamh still did their normal set and to see a group of people with such obvious passion for what they do was lovely to watch. Thank you everyone for a fab evening. I can now put a pin in Grimsby as another place Lee has brought me to visit for the first time.”

“I'm sorry, but was your reporter not at the Auditorium that night? - because Lee was not upstaged by anyone. HE was the star of the show. 'Curtain Up Productions' were, quite frankly, an embarrassment, they were utterly appalling, I don't know what the Auditorium was thinking of by putting them on the same billing as Lee”
