CLEETHORPES Country Park will soon have a new wildlife sanctuary.

Work on the nature reserve is nearing completion and has involved creating an island within the existing lake, following local consultation.

Hundreds of tons of soil have been moved to create a channel to allow water to encircle an area with established trees, planted over 20 years ago.

Alan Fletcher, North East Lincolnshire Council's parks and open spaces manager is grateful to the residents and park users for their patience and understanding during the construction.

He said: "This island has created a dedicated area for wildlife in the park, especially the ground nesting wildfowl.

"Two large poles have also been erected that will accommodate nesting boxes for the resident owl population. As the ground conditions improve over the coming weeks fencing, cultivation and reseeding works will take place."
