A number of employers, training providers and business advisers attended the event, and with similar events planned throughout the year, Intraining is keen to hear from other local companies looking to take on new staff.

Employers who offer work to an 18 to 24 year-old on the Work Programme could be eligible to claim up to £2,275 under the Wage Incentive Scheme.

Vicki Daly, employer engagement consultant at Intraining in Grimsby, said: "We have held similar events in the past but this is a new year and a new start. We are looking at holding events on a quarterly basis and we are happy to hear from employers who would like to attend."

Lucy Ottewell, Intraining's business development manager for the north, said: "This event is all about trying to help as many people as possible to get back into work or on a training course.

"We can offer apprenticeships and NVQs for the local labour market, and we can also offer support to people already in employment.

"Grimsby has got one of the highest unemployment rates in the country and we need to do something about it."

Among the employers at the careers event was Coldwater Seafood.

HR officer Laura Botham said: "We have taken a number of CVs and a number of people have shown interest in factory work in the local area.

"It is always a benefit for us to get potential employees that are job fit and job ready and that is what Intraining provides."

Job-seeker Scott Turrell, 23, of Pershore Avenue, Grimsby, said: "I got laid off as a factory operative a month ago and I'm looking for more factory work and Coldwater could be an option.

"The Work Programme has been good. I go on the internet to look for jobs and I have been given help with my CV and covering letter."

Roy Childs, 41, of Bevan House, Grimsby, has been on the Work Programme for the past two months.

He said: "I came out of work in March last year and am looking for labouring or factory work – anything really, I just need to work.

"Today has been helpful. I've filled in the forms so I'm just waiting to hear back now."

To help tackle the area's job situation, the Grimsby Telegraph's Your Life Your Future campaign is aiming to find 200 work experience placements for job-seekers in North East Lincolnshire.

“It's mainly the people who won't get off thier backsides and do anything that complain. They think everything should be given to them on a plate and always come up with excuses not to work. "I'm not working with an agency, I'm not working in a factory, I've got kids, the Poles are taking all our work, I'm not working for NMW, there's no jobs.....moan, moan, moan"!!

You have to earn your jobseekers by actually seeking work!!! Some people think they will just walk into a job for 10 hours per week and 30 grand a year! Wake up, it aint happening!!! Some people are actually looking for work, and some people actually would do anyhting that meant their children had food on the table and a roof over their heads. They are unfortunately in the minority. Yes, not everyone on jobseekers is a scrounger. But a very high percentage are.”

“K199122 - I agree in some respects. Some employers do take advantage of work experience and see it as free labour. But, it works for the individuals and not always for the employer. It helps you by giving you the experience you may not already have. It also fills in gaps in your employment history and shows that you have actually been doing something with your time. If 2 people go for an interview, both have same quals and experience, but 1 has completed valuable work experience and the other hasn't, who do you think will be more employable?

Most people who complain are the ones who don't bother thier backsides!!!”

“one of the highest unemployment rates if they are looking to start 200 work experience, why cant the take on 200 people on a wage, and actually help grimsby, how does work experience help, free slaves spring to mind i attended a work experience interview and was offered a position, not to start immediately that was orignally planned, savers in freshney place where the manager quite openly admitted, she doesnt need to take on new staff because she relied heavily just on work experience i think it is disgusting that company like that would rather have work experience permanently to offering a jobseeker a paid job !!!!”

“Raofdesign - I agree, the cue world jobs fair wasn't very good. But, and it's a big but. You need to look at were we are and what our labour market is. We are predominately a production town, and have one of the largest concerntration of production facilities in the world. It would make sense for these people to be at the fair. Thorpe Park, although only seasonal, employ 100's of people per year.

Like you, I wouldn't like to work somewhere that I had no interst in and hadn't trained for. But I would, and I have, if it meant I was earning money. Being in that job helped me to save for a place in a town were there was an opportunity for me to do what I had trained for. It was a means to an end. I didn't like it, but I still did it and a lot of other people do.

If you have been to school, college, university you obviously understand what hard work is. You also understand what paying your dues is. If it's something you need to do in order to get where you want, then do it.

In my experience the people who tend to complain the most are the ones that feel hard done to, have the ability to do something about it, but won't. My question to you would be, why did you train in a specific field if there isn't the opportunity to prectice it were you live? Can't you move? Can't you apply for jobs outside of our area in another town or city? Again, millions of people do it. If it bothers you that much, stop talking and complaining and do something about it.

There is a problem with this town. The problem is everyone expects everything to be handed to them on a plate and won't work for it. It's up to the people of Grimsby to change Grimsby. And until we do...............”

“KT1972 - Your comment is uneducated and ridiculous. You are complaining about discrimination and beaing treated as a leper when it is nothing of the sort! It isn't financially viable for an employer to employ someone to start at 10, when production begins at 6! I am a single parent and I work full time! If I can do it then so can you. Stop complaining, get off your backside and get a job. If you really wanted to you could be working right now. But you won't. You are too busy hiding behind being a lone parent and then complaining because people won't bow down to your needs.

Stop complaining, pull your finger out and do what millions of lone parents do: WORK!”

“"Grimsby has got one of the highest unemployment rates in the country and we need to do something about it.".... I think part of the problem is that there isn't a great range of work available here for those who are unemployed. It's also a massive mis-judgement that those on job seekers are proud of this and are unwilling to work. I have found it difficult finding a job in my field of design which I recently graduated with a degree in. I know before long I am going to have to relocate in order to get a job in what I have worked so hard for in terms of GCSE's, A-level's then BA Hons. Yet, at a recent jobs fair held at Cue World all that was really on offer was to work at Burger King or Thorpe Park. Some may argue "at least this is a job", however it's not what I have worked so incredibly hard for to end up doing. I don't think this area does enough as a whole to attract and work with other industries besides food production and similar vocations. If like me you have graduated in a specialist field, then it can be really tough to find work here.”

“yeah, all very positive? But what about what they don't tell you.

I was there, and spoke to the same people featured, I've had experience in factory work, but when I mentioned that I am a lone parent, they don't want to know.... yet we face the same sanctions as any other jobseeker. They are interested in the young as there are financial incentives for them, but when it comes to families, we are automatically discounted for whatever reason. In this case it was because I couldn't start work at 6am as I have to get my son to school each morning.

Under no circumstances can the let parents have a 10am start. Why? Well today's businesses don't work like that any more!

If I was disabled, or from some other European country, then there are laws forbidding such discrimination, yet mention "single parent" and we're treated like a leper.”
