AN ICONIC name in England's World Cup winning side is visiting the area for a youth sports groups fundraiser.

Nobby Stiles, a rock in the England's defence throughout the 1966 World Cup, will talk at a fundraiser for four Immingham organisations, along with his son, comedian John Stiles.

They met ten years ago playing football for the Pilgrims, and are concerned at the loss of amenities in Immingham and what it will mean for the next generation.

Shaun said: "We were worried that we would lose the resource centre where lots of local clubs play and we started fundraising.

"Some of my best memories as a child were with sports clubs and without them, there wouldn't be much here for young people."

The event has been held for Pilgrims AFC before, but it is the first time it has aimed to raise money for various sports clubs, not just the football team.

Mark said: "All these clubs work on a voluntary basis, but you would be surprised how much it costs to keep a team going with training balls, cones – and fees for pitches and referees have really shot up recently.

"It's also really hard to get sponsorship from companies in these hard times.

"These sports clubs keep kids off the street and doing something positive. We just want to help with the continuation of that."

It is not the first time Nobby has visited Immingham, and Peter Shilton and Sir Geoff Hurst have attended previous events. However, they hope the legend will help them raise more than previous guests of honour.

Mark said: "Some of these guys can cost more than £5,000, but we know Nobby's son John from previous events and we managed to get Nobby for a more affordable price. It means that we can raise more money.

"In the past, we have done three-course dinners and paid the fees, but people just don't have the money to pay for expensive tickets these days. This time, it will be an affordable night where everyone can have a good time."

The event will take place on Saturday, October 13, at Immingham Golf Club, from 8pm. Tickets cost £10 for over-14s – who must be accompanied by and adult – and £15 for adults.

To buy tickets, call Mark on 07725 546902, Shaun on 07930 202810 or Immingham Golf Club on 01469 575298.
