After beating Ormesby 5-3, they conquered winless Bonsall Barbarians by the same score before drawing 4-4 with Halton IV. Their only defeat was a 5-3 reverse against Cliffedale Chandlers.

Bray said: "We are making considerable improvements and are in a very good position in the league at the half-way stage of the season."

In the overall player averages, Grimsby talent Sean Ward is fourth – on 87.50 per cent after 14 wins and two defeats. Two of the players ahead of him have only played four games.

Ward was rated as the player of the match in two of the games.

He impressed in the victory against Bonsall Barbarians, in which he won both his games in straight sets.

Jonathan Corry also won both his matches, the first of which went to five sets.

In the defeat against Cliffedale, Ward won his first match but was finally conquered in his next – losing the deciding game in a five-set thriller, 15-13.

Six of the matches went to five sets as the Mariners pushed their opposition all the way.

Ward was at the double against Halton, but the Mariners had Jack Blyth to thank as he won the final match to earn his team a 4-4 draw.

Blyth also played a decisive role in the win against Ormesby V. He won the final match which bagged Grimsby a 5-3 win when defeat would have seen the opposition earn a draw.
