VOTE: Volunteers to be given speed cameras to help clock repeat offenders
SPEEDING motorists will soon be facing the short arm of the law as primary school pupils prepare to sign up for their own handheld speed cameras.
The Community Road Watch scheme, which is designed to put the skids on inconsiderate drivers in speeding hot-spots around the town, is being rolled out by Humberside Police next month and residents ranging from children to pensioners will be asked to take part to help clock repeat offenders in their neighbourhood.
-

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Ryan Boyd, 6, from Laceby Acres Primary School, will be one of the pupils keen to monitor speed on Broadway.
One of the first roads to enter into the community camera initiative will be Grimsby's Broadway, which is home to two primary schools and a children's centre and has been described as a "rat run" by residents following a number of dangerous crashes in recent years.
Problems with speeding and parking were addressed during a packed neighbourhood forum meeting, where it was revealed that members of the community will be given the chance to record driving data outside their houses.

The information collected by eagle-eyed residents, who will be working alongside local PSCOs, will then be logged by traffic enforcement officers who could then be in a position to press charges against repeat offenders.
Humberside police casualty reduction officer, PC John Mallett, said volunteers will focus on areas where there are not high casualties, but there are speeding problems.
Waltham's Cheapside and Habrough's Station Road will be among the first locations where volunteers will clock speeding motorists and pass the information on to the police. Letters will then be sent to culprits reminding them of the law and the penalties for speeding.
PC Mallett stated that the role of volunteers will be to educate the motoring public rather than directly enforce the law. He added repeat offenders will get a knock at their door from officers.

“I¿m not often compelled to write in but reading your article about using children to monitor traffic ¿popped my cork¿ somewhat. At first it sounded like the last days of the Third Reich when Granddads and grandsons were employed to ¿save the day¿, incredible!. Placing young children in close proximity to moving, (dangerous) traffic with speed guns is the most harebrained idea I've ever heard, especially as where it was reported that cars, being driven by idiots, were coming off the road.
More traffic calming devices? If the people who create the policies in this area have their way the whole borough will be pedestrianised before too long. Already, the roads around Grimsby are an assault course of such devices, it's a wonder that traffic moves at all. Roads are there to be used and navigating from A to B in the most convenient and energy conserving way should be encouraged. If this is termed as using a ¿Rat Run¿, then I¿m sorry but I shall continue to use ¿Rat Runs¿. Knowledge and use of the local road system can also alleviate congestion on the main routes through the area which are already congested with suspension wrecking devices. In my opinion it's just another knee jerk reaction to dealing with the small percentage of total idiots that are allowed to get away with driving like maniacs.
Accidents involving cars and pedestrians aren¿t always the car drivers fault. Only the other day a young couple with a pram walked straight out in front of me, without a look or a thought. It was only my actions that prevented them from receiving injury. I'm sure that kind of incident happens every day with a lot of drivers. Cyclists and pedestrians seem to think they are invincible and the motorist will do their thinking for them.
I'm all in favour of children getting involved in the safety agenda, it is to be applauded. Standing in harm¿s way isn¿t. If they are being educated into not being the next generation of ¿J¿ walkers, and they can educate others to respect the law and the use of roads, then that is a good thing. Hopefully these fresh minds will bring fresh ideas to people who appear to have run out of them. A car is only as dangerous as the person driving it!”

“Just get one of these
Beltronics Pro RX65 or
Valentine One
I seem to recall there was another stupid stunt with so-called Pace Cars driving thru town c2005. Volunteers would drive at a funerial pace in town in their own vehicles with a Pace Car sticker on the back. In one instance a motorist in the long queue behind was so frustrated, he followed the pace car and when it stopped gave the pace car driver some ABH. Naturally the assailant didn't get charged.
Now with all these yobs running around with the our upside down law going soft on hardcore criminals and hard with law abiding citizens, then I wouldn't be surprised if a yob driver seeing an imitation speed gun officer would pull up and get up to menaces. I certainly wouldn't volunteer.”

“In communist East Germany 1 in 8 of the population was an informer. With all the 'Watch Schemes' being put in place and integrated with corporate policing, the Superstate will soon reach that target. people do not realise how they are being used as spies for the corporate councils to make more money and collect data.
What happens to a child when it is disclosed that he was responsible for snitching on someone else's Dad?
These watch organisations have not got a brain between them, they just follow orders.”

“Yet another example of desensitizing and using children to accept the surveillance society. This is another addition to the government sponsored Snap Scouts Program which encourages children to 'snap' photos and record conversations; and instantly upload the data to a DHS link which hosted by cell providers. “Hitler would be proud of us. He started the hitler youth now we have it here, getting our children to become police. The goverment already ask us to "shop our neighborours", we are on cctv 24/7 wherever we walk or drive, our emails are read before we even have the chance to read them and phones are used to listen in on our conversation.
You cant argue with a police officer any more as section 25, (I think it is), alows them to arrest you, even though your just waiting to pick someone up to ensure their safety. What a great country we live in. Not far off a dictatorship”
