BYGONES: When Take That came to Grimsby
HOW times – and haircuts – have changed.
It's hard to believe it was 20 years ago when Take That, one of the biggest boy bands of all time, came to Grimsby.

-

FOR THE FANS: Jason Orange and Howard Donald wow the screaming fans by showing off their six packs. Gary Barlow, centre, decides to keep his jacket firmly zipped.
-

CENTRE OF ATTENTION: A bare-chested Jason Orange laps up the attention from all the screaming girls during the band's visit to Toll Bar School.
-

STAR: Gary Barlow waves to the crowd. Pictures: Ray Corke.
-

ENTERTAINER: Robbie Williams.
-

NEVER FORGET: Fans scream their approval as Take That perform at the secondary school.
-

STRUTTING THEIR STUFF: From far left, Howard Donald, Robbie Williams, Mark Owen and Jason Orange.
Now global superstars, Gary, Robbie, Mark, Jason and Howard were virtual unknowns when they took to the stage at Toll Bar School, New Waltham, in 1991 – but they were greeted by scores of screaming girls – a sign of things to come.
The five hunky chaps dominated the charts for half of the 1990s, notching up hit after hit. When Robbie left, fans thought it was all over, but the foursome continued until 1996, breaking hearts all over the world.
Nowadays, it's a different story. The band reformed to huge success and their new material is even better than the first time round.
And, of course, Gary has filled Simon Cowell's shoes on The X Factor, proving his pop royalty credentials.
But for now, let's relight our fires, for it only takes a minute to travel back to 1991, when five cute young lads arrived at Toll Bar as a new group trying to carve out a career in pop.

“take That where very well known when they came to Grimsby, they had been on the cover of Smash Hits numerous times before even releasing a single. I remember a friend coming over from Hull trying to get in at Toll Bar for the show...”

“Remind me: what instruments did Take That play?
By the 90s, chart music was terrible. I'd much rather listen to 1980s Hall & Oates, Toto, Duran Duran, Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones, Ultravox, Level 42, Big Country, Eurythmics, Simple Minds etc.
Of course, music peaked in the 70s with ABBA.”
