POLICE are urging motorists to take extra care on the region's roads as the weekend's wintry weather continues to cause difficulties.

Fog, slush and icy patches made for a treacherous commute to work for many yesterday morning, following Saturday's heavy snowfall, and it's set to continue.

While hundreds would have ventured outside to enjoy the snow at the weekend, the start of the working week was characterised by disruption, with problems reported on the roads, at Humberside Airport and even on the ground, as people struggled to safely traverse the icy footpaths and pavements.

A stretch of the southbound carriageway of the A15 between Barnetby and the Humber Bridge had to be closed after a six vehicle pile-up yesterday morning.

Humberside Police said that it appeared that drivers were "not prepared for the sudden change in visibility" caused by the fog over that stretch of road.

Nobody was injured in the incident and police have now appealed to motorists to take extra care as they tackle what they called "bad driving conditions".

A spokeswoman said: "Police are asking for those travelling in and around North and North East Lincolnshire to take extra care due to similar weather conditions across the region.

"The advice given to drivers is to take extra care and to plan extra time for your journey, please make sure that your vehicle has its lights on and leave a considerable distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.

"The freezing weather has left black ice on many of the roads, so please be aware of this when driving."

The Met Office is now forecasting bitterly cold weather for the next ten days and there is a chance of hard frosts and snow for days after that.

At the time of going to press, a two-day "Yellow" warning of ice had been issued – the third most serious – for the entire Yorkshire and Humber region, saying that there remained a risk of disruption to travel.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Ice is likely to form on untreated roads and pavements across many parts of northern, central and eastern England.

"Wintry showers will also have affected eastern and southeastern England overnight and into Tuesday, leading to some further slight accumulations of snow in places, while freezing fog patches will be an additional hazard across northern England.

"The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel."

Meanwhile, Jason Longhurst, head of development at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "I'm pleased to say that the weather over the weekend was nowhere near as bad as last year.

"The gritting crews are used to these conditions and had the situation quickly under control.

"However, I must stress that motorists must take care and drive according to the conditions."
