On cloud nine after meeting Billy Fury
RECENTLY we printed an article on the local music scene by Geoff Lindley. In it he asked if readers could remember the day Billy Fury drove his car on to Cleethorpes beach and had to be rescued when his vehicle became bogged down in the sand.
Jacqueline Gibbs, of Scartho, remembers the incident well. She wrote: "I would be about 14 years old at the time and still at school, so it must have been 1962/3.

'lovely and friendly': Billy Fury got his Jaguar stuck on Cleethorpes beach.
"We used to camp out at the Ritz all night to be sure of getting tickets for the live pop shows. We were perfectly safe because we all looked after each other and usually there were adults there as well.
"All the big names came. Cliff Richard, The Shadows, Billy J Kramer, The Searchers, Fourmost, Joe Brown etc.
"My friend and I went for a walk to Cleethorpes in the hope that we could find out where Billy Fury was staying and get an autograph. He was my heartthrob!
"We were ambling along the prom, chattering away as teenagers do, when I noticed a car on the beach. As we got nearer, I couldn't believe my eyes, it was him – Billy Fury.
"He was with his mates, Marty Wilde and Vince Eager. They were walking off the beach towards the prom. So, of course, we sat on the wall and watched.
"To our amazement, Billy and co came and sat on the wall with us. I was beside myself, I couldn't believe it, it was Billy Fury.
"He was lovely and friendly and we chatted away as if we knew him. I couldn't believe how scruffy Marty Wilde looked, his shoes were falling off his feet.
"Billy had been showing off, driving his Jaguar on the beach, and got stuck. The tide was coming in so they were beginning to panic. We sat and waited with them until the fire brigade came and rescued the car.
"When I got home and told my mum she asked if I was sure it was him, then when she looked at the Telegraph she knew it was. I was on cloud nine for months. What a day!"
