“I've just logged onto this new site over the weekend and there's one or two things about it I don't really like but I think having both the old letters section and the new discussion section wouldn't make sense. I always found it confusing when there were replies to letters printed the paper on both the site and in the paper as it kind of separated the debate. On the subject of dumbing down the English language - since when was '2' easier to write, or type, than 'to'? That still annoys me to this day.”

“The Gt said that the Viewpoint 'letter of the day' would be listed in the main news section and clearly labelled 'VIEWPOINT'.
There are some days, of course, when the letters are so pointless and boring that they're not worth putting on the site for comment, but the one in question was exceptionally good and would have elicited some good discussion, I think (In fact, it was perhaps the only thing WORTH reading in todays paper. The irrelevence of todays 'news' was apalling.. even for the Grimsby Telegraph, which seems to have given up reporting anything of note, just lately.”

“English is a modern and dynamic language which changes all the time, your dumbing down is my evolution.

I am more often appalled by those who would seek to criticise others' use of English, while at the same time making mistakes in their criticism.”

“Maybe a better term would be 'unnecessary alterations' rather than 'dumbing down'? I agree that English is a dynamic, ever-changing language but I think there has to be a unified standard in written English otherwise it becomes unintelligible. I have no problem with people using new words or "fashionable" synonyms but I do have a problem with people using the likes of 'txt spk' when writing. Why people do that whilst using a computer keyboard I'll never know. I'd find it ten times harder to type something out constantly inserting numbers and removing vowels.”

“The biggest issue that I find, working as a Professor of English, is the insidious intrusion of incorrect grammar due to American influence. The biggest offender is McDonald's slogan "I'm lovin' it!" Since the verb 'to love' is a stative verb it cannot be used in the continuous form. Then there are all the other issues about the appalling language used in modern music.”

“There is no way you are a professor of English, unless you're teaching English as a foreign language? One word - Gerund.”

“Free_Speech what is the point you are failing to make? Perhaps, before attempting to, incorrectly, draw attention to my alleged mistakes, you might like to check your own grammar and punctuation.

The verb 'love' is a stative verb and doesn't take the gerund form. Stative verbs do not take the gerund and cannot be used in the present continuous form.

Whether you like it or not, my title is Professor.”

“Tax Payers & the Unemployed we have GOT to put a stop to this . The tax payer is paying 5 billion into this ridiculus goverment flagship & the unemployed are being punished whilst the fat cats who run the work programs are getting richer by the minute ........I qoute

Private firms are being awarded multimillion-pound contracts to run the Work Programme have advised that there should be many more cases where claimants have their benefits stripped as punishment for failing to seek work.

As part of its crackdown on welfare dependency, David Cameron's government has more than tripled the number of punishments enforced against failing jobseekers across all its schemes. The number of cases has risen from 139,000 benefit cuts under Labour in 2009 to more than 500,000 in 2011

The Work Programme appeared to be focused on slashing benefit rather than putting people into work. "These figures are a complete lie to the government's claims its welfare reforms are about helping people into work.
By the time it's finished, more people will have been sanctioned by the Work Programme than properly employed through it. Every month thousands of people are having their only source of income stopped and being pushed into hardship.

Working Links and G4S may not be very good at finding people suitable work, but they're dab hands at punishing them." The private firms say they make their referrals to job centres in line with government guidelines.
Funny how they should say that as there turn-over is £123m .
This IS NOT a program to help the unemployed it's just a business !
PLEASE MAKE A STAND NOW ............
