MORE doormen are being drafted into Grimsby Top Town pubs to make Christmas safer for revellers.

The preparations come in the wake of an assault outside The Friary pub, on Victoria Street, at 5.45pm on Sunday.

As reported, a 28-year-old man was critically injured, and three men are currently in police custody.

Grimsby PubWatch said extra staff are being taken on in the run-up to Christmas to reassure customers the town's bars are safe.

A spokeswoman said: "The pubs in town usually take on more door staff before Christmas. They are taken on during weekdays and not just at weekends.

"We have had a couple of incidents over the past two months, but they are quite rare compared to how it was before.

"We have the radio link between most of the pubs and it works well."

Humberside Police has today appealed to anyone who witnessed the assault outside The Friary to come forward – find out more in today's Grimsby Telegraph.

“can see what you are saying bombay..but i think people have got realise a we are not police, we have the same remits as any other human, but as an 'old school@ doorman i can say that my care of duty to all people doesnt end when they leave the premises, drunk or otherwise. that duty is only relinquished when they say i am fine and thank you!!!! we cannot be responsible for drunken yobs who think they are above the law. i believe in what i do and have made it a career and have had a lot of fun doing the job but the groups of yobs, people who binge drink and also general trouble makers cannot always be stopped by us... thats when the constabulary have to step in...would you risk you life to take on a group of yobs hell bent on inflicting pain to some defenceless drunk????”

“18yr doorman you have no joined up thinking. You protect your staff, premises and patrons?... When your staff have served customers with alcohol that they clearly can't handle - which you've let in because they were not wearing a baseball cap or maybe their shoes were very shiny or even wearing a smart
suit (obviously there not going to cause any trouble)?.. Then once they have left your premises say it's the old bills problem is bang out of order. I enjoy a drink but would never go in a place that had to have a "doorman" outside and would not recommend anyone else to. This is just part of our Jeremy Kyle society. (yob culture). I notice the purpose built drinking row at the river head is nearly derelict now apart from lloyds. It's a shame but decent folk don't go out in the town centre any more!!!!”

“having done 18 years security and door work i unfortunately disagree guys....door staff are there to protect the staff, premises and patrons. anything going on outside the premises legally is not there responsibility. i will say though IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE LOCAL POLICE to maintain law and order!!!!! dont get me wrong the majority would get involved, myself included, but it is not what they are licensed or paid to do!!!!!! as always if the doormen did get involved and helped the victim then good on them and well done..more door staff is not the answer,,,,,MORE POLICE MR PRIME MINISTER!!!!!!!!”

“Alcohol is the problem full stop. and what a sad view Lil Old you! doormen are qualified and the doormen/women on this premises are fantastic very welcoming and very profesional unfortunately its the nature of there job's to be in and get involved with unsavoury situations and do some times have to meet a drunken force with force its the nature of the beast that alcohol creates”

“I agree with you Steve, I don't think the extra doormen will make any difference. Especially considering the town doormen's reputation...it wasn't that long ago I witnessed a doorman ejecting a man with so much force they rammed his head into a solid, stationary object leaving the man unconscious on the floor. I'd rather stay in thanks!”

“Think I'll give going out in Grimsby a miss this year.

    Another serious assault then.

It's not the pubs fault, its the low life scummy people who use them. Extra door staff sadly won't make much of a difference. If someone is hell bent on causing a fight, they will do it regardless of however many doorman there is.”
