Residents say third nightclub would be 'the last thing Market Place needs'

CLEETHORPES residents have been split by proposals to convert a derelict Market Place restaurant into the street's third nightclub.

The plans to transform the old China Town building into a club have been re-submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council by Mrs Abu-Hassan, after her first proposals were rejected by the committee earlier this year.

As reported, the committee ruled that the original design, drawn up by DMC Architecture Ltd in Waltham, was not in keeping with conservation area planning rules.

The architects have been back to the drawing board and have now redesigned the nightclub – but while some believe revamping the old building would be a dream come true, some residents from neighbouring Cosgrove Street say it would be nightmare.

See today's Grimsby Telegraph for more details.

“A nightclub will only affect the residents that live on it's doorstep, they are irelavant, build a nightclub , I get a good nights sleep, that's all that counts!”

“I'm all for making Cleethorpes a better night scene as this is like it or not a major part of a tourism industry, people will always moan about noise but when you choose to live bang in a town centre then I just can't understand those claims.

I agree with Wayne though that too many clubs appeal to the chavs and ultimately those are the ones which fail, usually due to the trouble that comes with that.
I never had the money to do something like this but I always had a dream in my mind of what I would do had I the chance and I'm sure it would be successful.
The size of a venue counts but the first thing I'd do is design a bar which attracts women, they usually go for the 70's 80's bars, remember Chicagos in town? IMO that closure is when the Town nightscene started to fail, I know there's Flares Reflex around the corner but If you get a bar dedicated to a fun atmosphere, some Karaoke nights and well known ballads then so long as you attract the women the men will follow though the uncool music should keep most of the Chavs away.
As for the filler within the weeks Cleethorpes is crying out for a Coach House type venue with plenty of Tv's and all the sports on, the Coach House often has two matches + sky Sports News on at the same time. This will attract crowds on week nights and weekend afternoons.
1 Pool table allows any pub to accommodate up to 4 pool teams and if the deal is right certainly 2 or 3 is achievable, this coupled with a darts team and maybe a football team would complete my idea of a successful business.
The pubs moan about lack of income but too many just don't do enough to attract people in the week, everything is focussed on an expensive Friday and Saturday night.
If this pub follows suit i'll bet it will fade in time, just my thoughts!.”

“Cleethorpes has no Chinese restaurants, but enough of other types of restaurants, so why did the China Town restaurant fail?

Maybe a multicultural restaurant might work and be better? Chinese, Mexican, Greek and continental meals,...etc, all under one roof.”

“when the shops at the back arrive at work to find the broken glass, sick and damage from the users of the smoking area at the back they will regret they let this go through.”

“Just look at the Brittania corner area of Scunthorpe if you want an example of what could happen.Plenty of drinking dens and even the council(NLC) spent £18000 on gates to make the area traffic free weekends late at night so the drunks dont get run over.Add to this plenty of takeaways and do I need to say more!Dont let the same happen in Cleethorpes.”

“I'm not so sure it makes good business sense to make it a night club considering the recent history of pub and club closures. But at the same time I wonder what would make good business sense for the building.

The creation of jobs would definately be welcome.”

“If this goes ahead, it could go one of two ways. One - become a recipe for disaster with it being in very close proximity to pizza/kebab shops with people hanging about, there is sure to be trouble in the early hours every Friday and Saturday night knowing some of the brain dead chavs which unfortunately infect the Cleethorpes nightlife scene. Or two - If the new owners attempt to attract a more mature crowd playing good music (only have to look across the road at Bar Baylon), coupled with a bit of Police presence (which ought to be there already!) and this could become a great venue.

The fear is though that it will be turned into a run-of-the-mill club playing garbage dance tunes which inevitibly attracts young (and some old) morons who have a few and want to take the world on.”
