A HOMEOWNER has called for safety improvements on a "dangerous" junction after a car mounted the pavement and smashed his garden wall.

Two cars were in a collision on the staggered junction between Dudley Street and Littlefield Lane, at 8.54am yesterday, one of which careered into the garden wall of a house on the corner – smashing it to pieces.

John Dunks, 51, whose garden wall was smashed in the accident, said that there is at least one accident a month on the junction and called for action to improve safety.

"It's a dangerous junction and someone is going to get killed unless something is done about it," he claimed.

"Lots of people use this route to walk into town and if someone had been on the pavement when that car hit my wall, they would be dead.

"At least once a month, I will be sitting in my living room and hear a screech and an almighty bang.

"Once I took three young children into my home because they were in shock.

"I tell the police officers that it is dangerous every time and they are always sympathetic, but nothing happens – I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall."

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "Police were in attendance at a road traffic collision at the junction of Littlefield Lane with Cromwell Road at 8.54am.

"The incident involved a silver Vauxhall and a silver Saab and two people were treated for minor injuries."

Jason Longhurst, head of development at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "A study of the police collision database suggests that this junction operates with relative safety.

"There has been eight reported personal injury collisions in the past five years, with none reported so far during 2012.

"Contributory factors in the police reports cite 'disobeyed traffic signals' and 'failed to look properly' in the majority of collisions suggesting poor compliance with the signals.

"We will raise this further with colleagues in Humberside Police with a view to increased enforcement."

So both the council and Humberside police are going to ignore the warning of the guy whose garden wall was smashed in the accident then.”

“Pedestrianise the whole area and there would be no collisions. We should think of people before all these cars rushing about.”

“This juction is terrible for a pedestrion or a driver, the lights need to be staggered, as soon as one goes red the other goes green and it doesn't give people chance to clear the junction. It really wouldn't take much for NELC to sort this problem out”

“Nothing needs doing to this junction apart from changing the timing so that more cars can get through the lights from Littlefield Lane on green.

No excuse for going through a red light no matter how much time you think you save, but it would be less likely if the timings were better. Plus, how about a few prosecutions for the idiots who break the law?”

“that junction always has been a nightmare, cause it is not a 4 way stop, even when the pelicon crossing is green for pedestrions, the number of times i have almost been wacked by a car turning corner , when going my doctors, i have lost count. and the crossing is on green, but all 4 lights are not red. people are always running the red light on that junction, including buses.

they need to make 4 way stop for crossing and also need to put red camera there, to stop the buses going through on red.”

“Nothing wrong in the junction, everything wrong in the heads of some drivers. Light jumping is the main cause, get them caught, prosecuted and the cases reported in the press, that's the best deterrent to bad driving.”

“Simplrsy way would be to stagger the junction lights from railway end and also from cricketeers pub, so they operate as per a one way street system.”

“The problem with that Oldkoppite is that it would make access to Dudley Street and Bargate impossible for anyone in the vicinity of Cartergate, Chantry Lane, Earl Street etc as the only alternative is the route onto Frederick Ward Way towards Victoria Street, increasing journey times & congestion in the centre of town.

My solution would be to simply retime the traffic lights so that there IS time for traffic to exit Littlefield Lane, if necessary staggering the green light for opposite sides of Littlefield Lane so that traffic has time to turn right, as that seems to be the greatest cause of confusion.”

“surely the simplest, most cost effective solution would be to make Littlefield Lane a one way street from the lights in the direction of the railway crossing? The road in that section is far too narrow for two way traffic, especially with parked cars. That way, no-one would be 'jumping' the lights. Think about that Mr Longhurst.”
