Get help from the stress busters
Open Minds, which is run by North East Lincolnshire Community Trust Plus, opened in February last year.
Today, to mark its first anniversary, the centre, on Osborne Street, Grimsby, opened its doors to the public so everyone can get a real taste of the help at hand.
It has helped 1,746 deal with a variety of issues including anxiety, stress and depression.
Manager Kristina Fletcher said the centre aimed to make people feel included while trying to reduce stigma surrounding mental health.
"One in four of us will be affected by mental health problems in our lifetime but there is still a lot of stigma attached to it," she said.
"We offer a number of services such as Tai Chi, yoga and reflexology and also conventional therapy with qualified health workers.
"People are often surprised how activities like these can help, but there is a lot of evidence proving that exercise can help with depression and anxiety as it releases serotonin – a mental stimulant.
"The activities are also a great way to prevent people feeling isolated."
Glyn Locking (41), from Grimsby, said Open Minds has turned his life around.
"I have taken part in all kinds of things at the centre like Tai Chi, Pilates, relaxation and meditation," he said.
"Someone at my GP's surgery told me about the centre. I did not even know that it existed and I had never considered alternative therapies before.
"It has really turned my life around. Everyone goes to Open Minds for different reasons but we all come out feeling the same way – positive and happy. It really is fantastic."
Adrian Ward (46), from Grimsby, took part in a six-week stress management course.
"The course was wonderful, it made me realise that I was not the only one stressed out and it helped me to look at things in a different way.
"The staff are fantastic and the centre itself is has a lovely atmosphere.
"Everyone is very friendly and it helps you to realise that you are not alone."
The open day was taking place today from 10am to 4pm. A number of health professionals and staff will be on hand to demonstrate a variety of taster sessions and information.
"Anyone who feels like they could do with a helping hand with stress, anxiety said Kristina. "We have so much to offer."
